cameras alone would be sufficient (as opposed to cameras + lidar + radar) eventually, if they could get the software right. IF. And so this whole time they have been selling vehicles which supposedly are fully self-driving capable, or will be "soon" , but which lack certain hardware which may be necessary to do the task properly.

But there is a reason the other companies went the other route -- because that was a fringe-y view and a big gamble based on the state of things at the point in time when the decision was made.

Edolf is now trying to jam through decisions to roll out fleets of these vehicles to get all the various stakeholders pot-committed. Once others have made huge investments in fleets of vehicles, and once local politicians have allowed this to be inflicted on the public, there are huge political headwinds to reversing course because that would involve admitting mistakes AND pissing off monied interests.

It is also why Edolf was so interested in wrecking every regulatory/safety body/agency he could, and why his Swasticar company hides as much safety data as it can, and also cooks the books on some data which is available on self-driving crashes (the software turns itself off once an collision is imminent and unavoidable, and the company then claims the self-serving was not engaged at the time of impact).

Yeah, I know it was a typo, but I saw it as an opportunity.
