Italy's centre-left claims victory in Tuscany election

Italy's centre-left opposition on Monday celebrated the re-election of the outgoing governor of the Tuscany region, Eugenio Giani, in a widely predicted victory.

Giani, a member of the centre-left Partito Democratico (PD) party, won 53 per cent of the vote, comfortably ahead of the 40 per cent of his main challenger, Pistoia mayor Alessandro Tomasi, of Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Fratelli d'Italia party.

Antonella Bundu, a candidate supported by a left-wing electoral list called Toscana Rossa, was expected to take around five per cent of the vote.

PD leader Elly Schlein welcomed the re-election of Giani, 66, with a video post on social media of her hugging the victorious politician surrounded by applauding supporters.

Elena Ethel Schlein was born on 4 May 1985 in Lugano, Switzerland.[3][4][5] Her father, Melvin Schlein, is an American academic and political scientist of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.[5][6] Her mother, Maria Paola Viviani, is a professor of comparative public law at the University of Insubria.[7] Originally, her paternal grandfather's surname was Schleyen; after arriving at Ellis Island, he changed it to Schlein.[5] Her maternal grandfather was the Italian Socialist Party politician Agostino Viviani [it], senator from 1972 to 1979 and a member of the High Council of the Judiciary.[8] Her paternal ancestors were from Zhovkva, now located in Ukraine, and her paternal grandmother, from whom she takes the middle name Ethel, was of Lithuanian origin.[5] She has a sister who is a diplomat by profession and a brother, Benjamin, who is a mathematician.[9]

Later in life, Schlein moved to Bologna.[10] She graduated in law at the University of Bologna in 2011, discussing a thesis on constitutional law.[7] Schlein holds American, Italian and Swiss citizenships. . .

She is also the first publicly-declared LGBTQ secretary of the Italian centre-left leading party. During her rise in the party, she has been compared to American congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
