Italy's centre-left opposition on Monday celebrated the re-election of the outgoing governor of the Tuscany region, Eugenio Giani, in a widely predicted victory.
Giani, a member of the centre-left Partito Democratico (PD) party, won 53 per cent of the vote, comfortably ahead of the 40 per cent of his main challenger, Pistoia mayor Alessandro Tomasi, of Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Fratelli d'Italia party.
Antonella Bundu, a candidate supported by a left-wing electoral list called Toscana Rossa, was expected to take around five per cent of the vote.
PD leader Elly Schlein welcomed the re-election of Giani, 66, with a video post on social media of her hugging the victorious politician surrounded by applauding supporters.
