For those who don't use Instagram (I couldn't find this clip on YouTube), here's a transcript of African American Policy Forum cofounder and Executive Director Kimberlé Crenshaw's insightful take on what's at the core of the effort to destroy our democracy:
..in it, that speaks most directly to us, and that is the anti-Blackness that is at the core of the effort to destroy our democracy, and the fact that we are sort of the first community to experience the thing that is going to happen to everybody else, and that is a reflection of a long, long-standing historical reality that anti-Blackness--I like to paraphrase Rick James--is a terrible drug because it makes people lean into policies and practices that actually undermine their own interests. But because it pushes us down first and more, they think it's the thing to do. So, we can see this going all the way back to the Civil War. The vast majority of white folks who fought to maintain slavery didn't own slaves, didn't even benefit from it. But they were willing to give up their lives for it. Why? Because of anti-Blackness. Because of the ideology that as long as I've got my foot on your throat, I'm doing okay.
