You can almost feel it.
It overwhelms the senses.
It curses humanity and destroys our decency.
Everything is defined by lies and distortions.
It's a real rat hole.

(79,410 posts)The battle between good and evil is the iconic human condition.
Our parents fought evil.
We were treated to a bit of peace in the valley.
But the fight is back again.
The kids have to decide if they want to live free or not.

(7,403 posts)I have no idea how many times I've bit my lip to keep from crying at the evil and injustice being done in our names. He has desecrated so much of what this country has stood for... for what people through the few centuries of our country have worked towards... after the awful way our country was founded. Trying to make reparations of some kind (and I'm not just talking about monetary reparations). We've enacted civil rights laws; recognized marginalized people; tried to level the field of opportunity for all people. Were we successful? No... but we were trying. I will never forget being with my Mom when Obama was sworn in... and both of us crying for what we THOUGHT this represented for our country. Gods, how wrong we were. It only drove the racists actually insane. And even today, we don't dare even *think* of running a female for president. We've seen twice how that's gone. I used to think by the time I was dead, we'd have a female president. I don't think that way anymore.
The evil is palpable to the point of feeling like you could cut it with a knife... but it manifests in many of us as overactive nervous systems... feeling antsy to the point of looking over your shoulder constantly to see what's coming after you, even if you have nothing to hide.
But many of us are also feeling something different. On top of the evil, we're feeling like something is breaking. Is it to our good, or not? Most of us are not sure... we only know we feel something is coming. Like we're at a crossroads and one road or the other is about to be chosen. My hope is it's the path that leads us out of this morass.

(79,410 posts)Our government, our values, our beloved democracy, our freedom.
What is also hard to take is that so many Americans are thrilled with the hatred,
cruelty, destruction.
And our guard rails all collapsed so quickly.
Courts, judges, Supreme Court, universities, law firms, corporations, media, etc etc.
They are all fine with a dangerous ruthless psychopath running the world.
And destroying their country.
I don't know, perhaps we can build back better.
We don't know the end of the story yet.

I keep wondering if the Republican voters understand that they VOTED for THIS
.for the past 40 years.
It all started with Ronnie Raygun.
More than 40 years of whistle - blows have turned into In Your Face Fascism.
Republican voters want hate, racism, lies, torture and the end to democracy,
This is the Republican Crime Syndicate of Fascism.

(2,051 posts)The Felon gives those that are evil permission and praise for the evil they do via cheering, pardons and approval.
The erasure of history is to make the past guilt free for white America.
The evil is abundant and all around us. We took the protectors, Democrats, civil rights leaders, civil and criminal justice for granted. The good that has come of this regime is that it has shown us the work that must be done to ensure we repair the damage and protect our future. It has also revealed the Republicans true selves and their constituents. Money truly is the root of all evil. Without it, the evil are still evil, but are no more powerful than the voter next to them. The Supreme Court is the cancer.

(4,017 posts)were not committed Trump voters but were fooled and were voting what they thought would help their pocketbooks.
A subset of Trump's voters are true believers. But there are many who were never true believers. It helps to realize it wasn't 7 million. Not by a long shot.
Let's say maybe half are true believers. Out of a population of 380 million, right? So 3.5 million divided by 380 million. If I did the math right, it works out to just over 9 thousandths of all Americans. (But it's late, and I may be guilty of fuzzy thinking at this point so it should all be checked.) Plus admittedly I'm spitballing the percentage of Trump voters who may be true believers.

(7,547 posts)Those that see others as equals and want to do right by themselves as well as others.
Then there are others who see people as useful tools to be manipulated for personal benefit.
Friends and trustworthy people versus manipulators, in short.
There is a small step from there for the second group who see themselves as superior to feel they are not bound by any moral, religious or legal codes, and are free to set their own rules.
Get a few of those in the one room, and there will be smirks, knowing smiles and thinly veiled plots and double talk to take advantage of those who are seen as inferior.
The second group thrives on secrecy, and in America at least, that veil is slowly lifting.
May they be fully revealed.

(3,287 posts)Yet we lack the means to do so.
Democracy is dead, along with the rule of law, and the courts are useless.
The voters are irreparably frightened, stupid, and ignorant willfully ignorant.
The American experiment has failed.
