International Olympic Committee Asks Fans to Not Boo JD Vance at the Opening Ceremony

Last edited Fri Feb 6, 2026, 03:23 PM - Edit history (1)

Story from yesterday so I'm posting in GD

Leading the U.S. delegation in Milan for the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony will be Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who arrived in Italy amid ongoing political unrest at home over killings in Minnesota. In fact, members of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations unit are set to provide security for the Games, leading to massive protests in Milan last week.

The Guardian reported today that “Olympic officials have quietly expressed hope the ceremony will unfold without political demonstrations directed at American athletes or officials.” Whether or not that’s the case remains to be seen.

If they wanted cheers, all they had to do was to send Kamala Harris or the Obamas. Sending Vance and Rubio is an in-your-face provocation practically saying, “we double dare you to boo us!”

They introduced the head of Italy, the Olympic Committee, some other dignitary or two going from right to left. Vance and wife were last on left don't think the MC said their names? NBC announcers were saying something but don't think they were introduced to the live audience. Anyone else catch that?

Now I'm just waiting for the consequences like in the movie "The Ring." Maybe I'll get smothered in my sleep by a sofa cushion or something.

Vance and his wife were shown that the boos were heard. The audience showed great restraint and class, imo, and didn't take out their disgust on them and, instead, made it clear who they intensely disliked.

On 14 February 2025, U.S. vice president JD Vance delivered a speech at the 61st Munich Security Conference. In his speech, Vance argued that Europe's principal danger came from erosion of democratic norms — especially censorship, suppression of dissent, and exclusion of populist voices ...

Vance warned that the U.S. would condition its support for Europe on whether its governments actually uphold free speech, press freedom, and political legitimacy, and criticized European governments for 'running in fear of their own voters'.
