My guess is Israeli intelligence gave the US the operational opening to kill Khameini and that was the “go” signal.

Israeli intelligence officers are deeply embedded into Iran’s power structure so I’d rate this with a fair degree of confidence of being accurate (and Israeli intelligence in the ME is why the US will continue to fund Israel at obscene levels).

Trump poked a sleeping bear, as he has done frequently in various arenas. Iran will not yield easily and they will fight both militarily and asymmetrically. While the Iranian military is formidable, it is no match for a determined U.S. military especially if supported by Israel's forces. On the other side of the equation, there aren't a lot of defenses against terroristic attacks especially against soft targets ouside of the theater of war. If the Ayatollah was killed, Iran will anoint a new leader who will get the position with a mandate to fight ferociously.

Trump does not think strategically. His weak brain is incapable of thinking beyond one or two steps. He has no idea how his war will develop but it will not be in the heroic romp that he is fantasizing.
