Economist paints bleak picture of America's future after Trump

By Matthew Chapman
Published March 24, 2026 5:56 PM ET

President Donald Trump's autocratic tendencies are doing more than terrorizing Americans, University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers told MS NOW's Alicia Menendez on Tuesday's edition of "Deadline: White House" — they are undermining America's future ability to grow and prosper.

Wolfers expounded on this amid reporting that Trump is going out of his way to pay companies to cancel wind energy projects — at a moment when his war with Iran is provoking an energy crisis.

"This is not a president known for thinking about the long tail effects of the decisions that he makes today," said Menendez. "I think what is startling is that he is making these decisions at a moment when Americans are really feeling the pinch. Reuters reporting Trump's approval rating has hit a new low of 36 percent. That is lower than at any time during the Biden administration. Gas prices are, in part, what is driving that approval rating."

Mr. Wolfers the person you are speaking about is convicted fraudster, that bankrupted casino's, and has 6 corporations foreclosed upon, he likes to bilk people, banks, and the American taxpayers with the idea that he is smarter than everyone else........... who's ego explodes every night in his capitalized rants............in other words he his one of the most dangerous persons on this planet and so is his maga party and courts...........he has no common sense, never had any............the only thing he has between his ears is how to hurt people...........in other words he does not care..............he was granted immunity by the maga senate and US Supreme Court because he is their ultimate wet dream to take down this country now and into the future...........kids be damned..........and screw the social safety nets, and water, air.......

Because youre right. Every damn time. Clinton gets the economy hot, and Bush comes in and causes a near depression. Obama cleans it up, and Trump who was starting to dismantle Obamas work, gets hit with COVID, then Biden comes in dealing with the high prices rising as demand begins again, but gets the country on track faster than any other nation. But because of continuing corporate greed keeping prices high, he pays the price.

But even FOX Business Network were mumbling their surprise at the market rise in the 24 summer.

A month before the election, the Economist had this on the front page.

I dont know why pundits never bring that up, when they get blasted by Trump sycophants on how bad the economy was under Biden.

Trump will drain the treasury before he leaves and add trillions to the debt. And so the future Democratic President will have to be careful with spending, and be blamed if the economy doesnt bounce back soon enough. Something like Medicare for All would cost a lot to get up and running. So it gets put on the back burner again, and they cant run on many major accomplishments. Republicans drain the treasury for that reason. I just wish Democrats would help explain this to voters somehow

Hope the next thing King Taco destroys is The Republican Party's electability for a generation or two, looks like he is doing a great job of it, but I've always known , They are going to bring the Country to its knees before people finally wise the fuck up

the things we *didn't* do that Trmp disapproved of, delegitimized, defunded, discouraged, attacked. And GOP went along with all of it, no matter how much it hurt their own voters -- it really, really, really didn't matter to them.

Please give the last 20 seconds or so a listen, even if you don't do the whole thing.
