(11,169 posts)The sad part of this is that I - an avowed atheist - know who that reference is about...I'll bet fewer than 50% of self-professed "Christian Nationalists" have clue one about it...

(4,159 posts)I went looking for the biblical passage. I knew about Romans 12:17-20. What I didn't know is that Paul was quoting from Proverbs 25:21-22 at the end.
If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.[e]
and
if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
22In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head,
and the Lord will reward you.

One would think any real deity would be capable of doing his own talking and that talking would be understood by all of us.
Then again, my unsympathetic view of religion has always been notorious. I have always said the pastor tends his flock to make them easier to fleece..

(17,562 posts)I also feel that it is very dangerous for that pastor to tempt God by asking that someone die. (I always clarify on DU that I'm not here to convert anyone. I am a Christian, and I'm fine if you are, or you are not. Each person must walk their own path where religion is concerned. My beliefs are no more and no less than anyone else's).
God might just decide he needs one less "pastor" - and I use that term loosely to apply to the hate-filled person spewing crap in the name of God.

(142 posts)James Talarico is the real deal when it comes to walking the Christian walk. He is very much of the same Christian tradition as we saw in Jimmy Carter. Just like the hypocritical religious conservative Scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus of blasphemy and claimed that he invoked the power of the devil because he healed on the Sabbath, the phony Christian Nationalists will attack real Christians like James Talarico.
When are these rightwingers going to wake up to the fact that Jesus was a radical woke leftist. If they actually read the Gospels they would know that.

(29 posts)If you Google "christian nationalism" you will find that is was invented by an avowed Racist, White Supremicist, authoritarian.
This has NOTHING to do with the Jesus in the Gospels. Or the New Testement.
Galations says "There is no Jew or Greek (all races are equal), no slave or free (no slavery / all classes are equal) rich or poor, male ore female - or any one inbetween. WE ARE ALL ONE IN JESUS CHRIST.
Holy Week is coming when Jesus directs us to wash feet. Think about this...
We are all "saved by God's unmerited grace" We are called to live that out, in real life for eachother; even our enemies...
Jesus calls us to Love Our Enemies, not as a strategy - but as a reflection of GOD's Love. It is THE WAY OF JESUS. The way to live, the way to be happy, The Way of Harmony & Peace. The Sermon on The Mount is Jesus clear instruction for the Peaceable Reign of God on Earth. Few have read it.
This is the standard by which you will know who is a follower of THE WAY OF JESUS CHRIST and who is ANTI-CHRIST.
Sorry but White Supremicist, RACIST, Authoritarianism - christian nationalism - IS NOT CHRISTIAN. PERIOD
MuirHero
(142 posts)I also am a radical Lutheran in the tradition of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Niemoller. You speak the truth. These Christian Nationalists would not recognize Jesus if he was standing right in front of them. They are following a false Gospel.

(89 posts)Pigseth's pastor is wrong on several levels, but two are more than outrageous from a "Christian" pastor. Certainly, calling for Talarico's death is beyond the pale, but calling for him to be crucified is saying Talarico shares Jesus' holiness.
