ProPublica @propublica 2hNew: Under AG Pam Bondi, the DOJ has dropped 23,000 criminal cases including hundreds of investigations into terrorism, white-collar crime and drugs while prosecuting 32,000 new immigration cases in just the first six months of Trumps second term.
The bulk of these cases, which were closed without prosecution and known as declinations, had been referred to the DOJ by law enforcement agencies under prior administrations that believed a federal crime may have been committed. The DOJ routinely declines to prosecute cases for any number of reasons, including insufficient evidence or because a case is not a priority for enforcement.
But the number of declinations under Bondi marks a striking departure not only from the Biden administration but also the first Trump term, according to the ProPublica analysis, which examined two decades of DOJ data, including the first six months of Trumps second term. ProPublica determined the increase is not the result of inheriting a larger caseload or more referrals from law enforcement.
In February 2025 alone, which included the first weeks of Bondis tenure, nearly 11,000 cases were declined, the most in a month since at least 2004. The previous high was just over 6,500 cases in September 2019, during Trumps first administration.

(24,383 posts)As for Congress not investigating: That's not just on Trump's minions' radar as they follow the orange head shit's orders.
So, seeing how the GOP majority won't, We the Democrats must pick up the slack and verbalize why it matters.
Why do you think I'm being sarcastic, popsdenver? These are the most perilous times I can remember.

(2,301 posts)I just couldn't think you were thinking that Congress, a wholly owned subsidiary of Republicans Inc., would listen to any Dems about this, much less about anything else......They have proven that, time after time, forever............
and anyways I wouldn't count on the 200+ Dems saying much more about it, except maybe a few of the vocal ones, like Bernie, AOC, Newsome.......

(94,261 posts)...they don't need any encouragement to investigate republican corruption when they have the actual power to subpoena and hold meaningful hearings with a legislative goal.
But, no one is ignoring this.

BREAKING: DOJ dropped 23,000 criminal cases, including investigations into drugs and terrorism, in the Trump Administrations first six months.

Tens of thousands of cases, including investigations into drug trafficking, white-collar crime, and terrorism have been dropped by the Trump Administration to make way for its mass deportation campaign. Americans are less safe because of the Presidents anti-immigrant agenda.

(388 posts)has found another way to steal. I wonder what the average bribe was. Maybe it was dependent upon the crime(s) committed, the ability to pay the bribe (use of the proceeds of the crime(s) is acceptable and preferred) and the overall degeneracy of the 'perp'. Pedophiles get a free ride.

(6,678 posts)I used to live in a town in SW AZ that was run by a local kakistocracy of old families and grifting politicians. The government was immensely corrupt. The citizenry was ignorant, apathetic, and cowed by fear of local government and law enforcement. There was no effective local media to explain to the populace what was going on. The system of controlling families, government, and law enforcement was a closed system that was basically impervious to change through e.g. electoral politics. The result was an ugly patchwork of irresponsible development, sketchy services, and lack of public accountability, so the locals suffered because of the corrupt politics.
My point is that there was literally no way to change or improve the situation without outside intervention. The FBI would have been the logical choice to come in, investigate, and try to clean up the mess. But, when the FBI is directed away from combating corruption, there is literally no way to improve things. That's where we are now. Trump's Amerikkka.

'White collar' crime is the worst. The punishments never approach the level of severity for the crimes. They usually get off with a little slap on the wrist.
UNLESS you are Bernie Madoff.

(13,371 posts)There are undoubtedly many that could be pursued by states in which the crimes were committed.
And then perhaps states could sue Pam Bondi/Justice Dept for costs of convictions -- and for damages associated with enabling additional crimes. Further investigation of the circumstances under which a case was dropped would undoubtedly turn up crimes for which she, and others, could be prosecuted by a state.
There would be no pardons for that shit
