Though I agree with you.

One of my dad's best friends was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. His transgression? He married a divorced woman. I don't know why they took such a hard line. They were married until death some 45 years later.

That would probably not happen today.

Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Roberts (Opus dei does not confirm, but all of the former are linked through Leonard Leo).

Given the Vatican under both Francis and especially Leo are trying to contain or dismantle Opus dei, they can start there. At least take Leo and Alito.

They would just have to go to confession to be no longer excommunicated. The catchesim and the canon law rule the Catholic Church.
