Peter Thiel has had his hands in so much fuckery to destroy the United States that it's no surprise he's bailing out. Our government is full of Palantir employees but he's trying to get beyond extradition reach in Argentina. Leaving his stink behind and dodging responsibility. 1/

Reporters need quotes from Peter's political proteges: his first two Senatorial projects, Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, the two who were seen by other Senators as planning Jan 6, the two who stood to object to the electoral vote. And Thiel's hand-picked VP JD Vance, the now-abandoned heir apparent. 2/

The NYT story is heavily curated by Peter's allies, all granted anonymity. Their takes are dutifully transcribed without any pushback. Peter knows how to work the press: in 2023, he got media to reprint the false claim that he was "done with politics" - right before he chose Vance as our VP. 3/
— capitolhunters (@capitolhunters.bsky.social) 2026-05-28T23:28:34.793Z
There were hints already on May 19, when JD Vance semi-praised the pope's encyclical, which everyone knew would criticize Peter's megalomaniacal AI dreams. Vance had been shockingly disrespectful to the pope earlier, when he felt safe as Peter's sidekick... 4/
— capitolhunters (@capitolhunters.bsky.social) 2026-05-28T23:28:34.794Z
The encyclical was even stronger than expected, a righteous broadside against Thiel and Vance and a call for humanity. Now Thiel is working the press on why he's fleeing to Argentina and Vance is trying to pretend he's always been a good Catholic. He knows his patron is abandoning him. 5/

(23,512 posts)You see: No matter how Milei and his money-laundering Economy Minister Caputo spin it, the economy down there is awful for most people - and that's despite three bumper crops in a row, and an oil export boom (which Milei largely inherited).
Add to that the mounting corruption scandals involving Milei, his witch-doctor sister, and his chief of staff on down - and the stage is set for his resounding defeat in the October 2027 elections.
The likely winner - center-left Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof - is both charismatic and has a very good record as governor despite 7 of the most challenging years in Argentine memory (and that, as you know, is saying a lot).
And while he's unlikely to bother Thiel in any way (except through a U.S. court order), the Namibian Nazi is unlikely to stay in a country governed by a left-wing Jew.
Polls already have Kicillof well ahead in the head-to-heads - especially in RW former President Mauricio Macri ("Mr. Macrisis" ) throws his beach hat in the ring.
Of course...Milei is very much counting on Needy Amin to put his fat, hepatitis-ridden thumb on the scale for him again in '27 - like he did for the '25 Midterms with the U.S. taxpayer-funded bailout.
So quién sabe.
Who knows.

(23,512 posts)Here's the townhouse he recently bought in an upscale Buenos Aires section:
The 8,000 ft² townhouse, on 2924 Dardo Rocha Street, was designed in the 1920s by the same Argentine architect (Alejandro Bustillo) who - unwittingly - designed what's widely believed to be Adolf Hitler's post-war hideout cabin in Patagonia.
I suspect that might've helped seal the seal for Herr Thiel.
It's also just across the street from the residence of Susana Giménez - the rabidly right-wing (and ethically challenged) "queen of Argentine talk" (gossip, would be more like it).
At US$12 million, it was a record for any single property purchased in Buenos Aires.

(30,529 posts)"designed what's widely believed to be Adolf Hitler's post-war hideout cabin in Patagonia." Seriously? Hitler did not survive and moved to Argentina. That's as batshit crazy as all the Alt-Right and MAGA conspiracy theories. Yes, some Nazis moved to Argentina, but there were German colonies in Argentina decades before WWII. Argentina was very wealthy at the time and, after the U.S., it was the second country to receive the largest number of European immigrants during the great migration. Their population doubled every six years thanks to the massive wave of immigrants, mostly Southern Italians and Spanish from Galicia. Although, Germans, Poles, Russians escaping the pogroms, British, Irish, Welsh, etc., also emigrated to Argentina. Most of the Welsh settled in Patagonia, some of the Germans too.
peppertree
(23,512 posts)And I'm with you on your point about Argentina's copious, and very diverse, wave of European immigration in the 1880-1950 era.
Over 6 million in all - in a country with only 2 million people in 1880.
As I once pointed out to another poster, that would be like having China's entire population move to the U.S. between now and 2100.
Suffice it to say - by 2100, U.S. culture would look very different. And that's just what happened down there.
BComplex
(9,992 posts)In fact, Argentina is where a lot of former nazis of WWII were finally found by the nazi hunters, and some arrested and/or kidnapped and taken to the Nuremberg trials.

(23,512 posts)2,000 Nazis (many of them war criminals) sneaked in via Operation Paperclip - and up to 10,000 if you include dependents.
I can tell you that some of the antique shops in Escondido, CA, look like Third Reich museums.

(23,512 posts)All rabid Republicans, of course. One later moved to Idaho, to flee "soshilism."
He liked recounting how his father (the Nazi) ended up fighting on the other side of his own brother (a "black sheep" who had emigrated to the U.S. before World War II - and then, God bless him, fought in it for the U.S.).
By my number, he missed out on at least $1 million in equity.
Beacool
(30,529 posts)Besides, there were many more Germans who had emigrated to the country years before WWII. My point is that although some Nazis were welcomed in Argentina, the German community was far larger and had been in the country years before the Nazis existed. Most Germans in Argentina were not Nazis. BTW, Argentina received a large number of Jewish people from Eastern Europe. As a matter of fact, Argentina has after the U.S., the largest Jewish community in the Western Hemisphere, and the 6th largest in the world.

(23,512 posts)The Nazis in Berlin had to launch their own newspaper in Argentina - the La Plata Süddeutsche Zeitung - to counter the staunchly anti-Nazi Argentinisches Tageblatt (by far the most popular German-language daily in Argentina - and the newspaper of record for the German-speaking community there for over a century).
The Süddeutsche Zeitung's assets were seized in 1945 - and to this day, you can make out where its logo had been hastily painted over on the top floor of its former headquarters in the neo-Gothic building on Corrientes 672 (downtown).
Perón had the building repurposed as the HQ of the state-owned Río Santiago Shipyards - today on the brink of closure thanks to the brazenly anti-industry Milei regime (most RW Argentine regimes since 1976 have been openly hostile to domestic industry, as well as to labor).
Qué será.
Beacool
(30,529 posts)I didn't know about the newspaper. As for Milei, he's another Trump. He's destroying Argentina like Trump is doing to the U.S.

(2,015 posts)if Argentina has an extradition agreement with the USA?
peppertree
(23,512 posts)Argentina - like many nations - will not extradite anyone they have reason to believe will face the death penalty.
The most recent such example, as far as Argentina, is of Kurt Sonnenfeld - a FEMA videographer who was charged with murdering his wife in 2002.
Sonnenfeld - who shot the last FEMA footage taken of the World Trade Center before 9/11, as well as some of the first from after the attack - has long suggested that his wife may have been murdered by the Bush regime in retaliation for his questioning the official story.
His murder charge was in fact initially dropped - before being unexpectedly refiled by prosecutors (i.e. someone in Washington made phone calls - if so, probably the eminently greasy John Ashcroft). Sonnenfeld left for Argentina at that point - and has lived there ever since.
He was almost extradited in 2015 - when then-President Cristina Kirchner (herself a neo-con target) granted him political asylum just days before leaving office.
So, yes - while Argentina has an extradition treaty with the U.S. (and many other countries), presidents reserve the right to override such orders. And this authoritarian Chucky-doll Milei definitely would, for those he sees as backers.
That's assuming, of course, that he'll be re-elected in '27 - which now looks very unlikely, given his mounting corruption scandals and the worsening Mileise.

I used to know all the words for all the songs.
But I haven't watched Evita in some time.
Maybe I'll make an effort to watch it this weekend.
When I first watched it, I was shocked that it was all song and very little dialog.
I watched it several more time and really got into it.
Same thing happened with Hamilton but for a different reason.
Evita was classic Broadway, while Hamilton was predominately Hip Hop.
I had to get used to the cadence.
