Former first lady Jill Biden has described a frosty encounter with her successor, Melania Trump, during Donald Trumps inauguration in her newly released memoir.
In the penultimate chapter of A View from the East Wing, Dr Biden details the moments before the handover between her husband Joe and his successor on January 20 2025, after months of ill-tempered clashes on the campaign trail.
Describing a bitterly cold winters day, the Democrat explained how even her choice of outfit was made with a view to appeasing the Trumps.
The blue was an obvious political choice, but purple signified unity. I still believe in that, she wrote, after deciding between two Ralph Lauren suits for the ceremony.

Jill Biden says she's sorry she didn't talk more about son Hunter's drug addiction
NEW YORK (AP) Jill Biden says she's sorry she didn't talk more about her son Hunters drug addiction during her time in the White House, explaining that she now realizes that being open about his substance abuse and his recovery can offer hope to others in the same situation.
In a wide-ranging interview with The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg to promote her White House memoir, the former first lady said Tuesday that she had put life in perspective after her husband, former President Joe Biden, was diagnosed with prostate cancer that spread to his bones.
She said she is no longer angry about the way Democrats pressured her husband to end his reelection bid after performing disastrously in a 2024 debate against Republican Donald Trump.
No, Im not angry. I mean, whats the purpose of anger now? Jill Biden said at the first event for her book, held at the 92nd Street Y in New York following publication earlier Tuesday.

A major landmark and historic treasure was being treated like a fixer-upper on HGTVs Property Brothers. It wasnt the loss of the blue-and-white striped drapes, the velvet sofa, the bookshelves filled with memorabilia that pained me it was the symbolic bulldozing of history and the eradication of institutional memory.
I kept thinking of everyone across the country that took pride in that building. I felt a sense of loss and grief with every blow from the wrecking ball. The innards of the East Wing were spread out for everyone to see, like a rare and precious animal that had been hunted down and killed.

I haven't read the book, but from the excerpts I think she has some interesting and poignant observations. She has a unique perspective and might as well have a say.

(7,057 posts)the authoritarian party in the next election instead of 'having her say". We don't need a rehashing of what happened during Biden's tenure. As Leftstreet said, it's not good to pick open a scab.

(280 posts)No one is going to be thinking about Jill Biden when they go vote in these next 2 major elections. If she felt she needed to get this off her chest and do it in a public way by writing a book, then more power to her.
She has a place in American history. She is an accomplished woman. She is someone to be looked up to.
No one is forced to read it. And its no one's business but her own as whether or not to write it.
