MI-GOV: Benson lands endorsement from prominent Black faith leaders in gubernatorial campaign
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has won the endorsement of the Michigan-Ontario Council of Bishops, adding another influential faith group to her campaign for governor as she works to consolidate support among Black voters.
The endorsement follows former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggans decision last month to drop out of the race. Duggan, who was running as an independent, had been trying to build a coalition that reached beyond traditional party lines, including support from some Black political leaders in Detroit, where he spent 12 years as mayor.
With Duggan out, the bishops endorsement is another sign that Bensons campaign is building a broad coalition of Detroit leaders, faith groups, labor organizations, and civil rights advocates.
People across Michigan are struggling, Bishop John Drew Sheard Sr. said in a statement. Every week at our churches, we hear about how amid rising prices, folks just cant get ahead. As pastors, we are called to both prayer and action. Thats why today we are endorsing Jocelyn Benson, a leader who will take decisive action to help our neighbors.
