CA-11: Chan's (D) chance to be SF's first Chinese American in Congress excites
One day after Connie Chan jumped into second place in the June 2 primary election to succeed U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi in Congress, the San Francisco supervisor went to Chinatown, where she said she visited a temple to express her gratitude.
Later, Chan went to the nearby 118-year-old Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association hall, where she was hailed as a hero by a crowd of business and cultural leaders and others who said they were eager to see her become San Franciscos first Chinese-American representative in Congress.
I am the daughter of Chinatown, Chan told the audience. This is really where I grew up, and really a space that raised me, a neighborhood that raised me. I want to say that this victory that we have from yesterday really belongs to the community.
Chan, a Democrat who received significant support from labor unions, reveled in the fact that she received more votes than centimillionaire Saikat Chakrabarti, a Democrat who poured nearly $10 million of his own money into his campaign, according to figures released by the San Francisco Department of Elections at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. There were still 122,400 votes remaining to be counted, according to the departments website.
