Weiss in line for expanded editorial control
Paramount has begun discussions with prominent media executives for a business-side position to complement Bari Weisss editorial leadership, signalling plans for her to manage news output across CBS News and CNN if the Warner Bros. Discovery merger proceeds. The position would take over responsibilities once held by former CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon, who left before the Skydance-Paramount merger. Paramount chair and CEO David Ellison has voiced strong confidence in Weisss work since she became editor-in-chief. Raw Story
Criticism from former CBS journalists
Former '60 Minutes' correspondent Scott Pelley has accused Weiss of pressing producers to adjust politically sensitive reporting to align with the Trump administrations narrative, including a case involving the killing of Renee Good. He alleged Weiss sought to portray protesters as more violent and to promote a disputed claim about Goods actions, which he declined to implement. Progressive group Our Revolution labelled her actions as propaganda, while CBS maintained her input aimed to improve accuracy and fairness. Alternet
A career shift from opinion writing to network leadership
Weiss, formerly an opinion writer at The New York Times and founder of The Free Press, assumed the CBS News editor-in-chief role in October 2025 without prior television news experience. Her tenure has included notable staffing changes, such as hiring Nick Bilton to produce '60 Minutes' despite his lack of TV or management background. Critics argue these choices mark a departure from traditional hiring based on journalistic experience toward politically aligned appointments. Alternet
Merger approval and legal challenges ahead
The ParamountWarner Bros. Discovery merger awaits regulatory clearance, with attorneys general from California and New York preparing legal action to block it. Paramount cannot engage directly with Warner Bros. Discovery personnel until approval, limiting outreach to candidates tied to the company. While regulators are expected to approve the deal, the legal challenge could affect its timing and execution. Raw Story
