I know that this isn't strictly political but I need to vent.
Somebody please develop some genetic mutation that makes their preferred food invasive species of plants.
The resident deer on the Mossfern "estate" have developed a tolerance- maybe even preference - for deer repellent spray.
Hundreds of dollars worth of perennials and some annuals are now future giant piles of shit mines.
Spared plants so far:
Ostrich fern and painted fern
Foxglove
Swamp Milkweed
Yarrow
Mints in containers
Monarda has been chewed but not totally decimated
And, of course culinary herbs (except for parsley and basil) and lavender
Planning on including:
Datura
Oriental Poppies
Monkshood.
Thanks for indulging.
Any other suggests are welcome.
Yes, I will post nicely curated skull and crossbones signs through the garden.

(131,689 posts)to move into the woods behind our house because the deer were eating everything. I heard that some people were getting lion and tiger poo from the zoo to spread in the garden to scare them off, but then your garden would smell like a giant litter box. About the only thing that ever worked for us was an electric fence.

(38 posts)My mom and dad live in Albuquerque and they have a flock of peacocks that escaped pens years ago and now roam the neighborhood, crowing crazily and eating all my mom's flowers. She has to figure out the few they don't like.

Supersize version.
The usual "other cures" being a 7 foot high fence, perhaps double perimeter.
If you can purchase a robot, they seem spooked only by objects moving towards them.
Dogs are good at this, I am told, but you might not want to let them loose, since deer often share the territory with predators, like mountain lions.
I researched this matter very thoroughly and decided to grow artificial plants, inside the house.
And return to the suburbs.
With all the wild critters, if you seriously want to grow things, you need a greenhouse with a solid floor.
I grew a vast variety of plants in the suburbs, including 50 rose plants at one home. Only gophers gave me trouble there, and there's a cure, of course.

(567 posts)I tried coyote urine. My former husband "marked" our driveway every evening. We've always had dogs. Nothing worked until we put up seven feet high plastic mesh around about one acre of our seven acres. A buck broke through once and this spring, because of some downed trees, a doe was able to leap, very elegantly, over the fencing.
Good luck.

(5,689 posts)I'm not an experienced gardener, but the previous owners of this place seemed to know what deer will avoid. I put in roses - but deer will eat the flower heads right off of rose bushes.. Lesson learned.
I've got a nice bed of lamb's ear, which deer won't touch. I'd prefer hosta, but they'd gobble that right down to the dirt. Deer tend to ignore butterfly bush and pachysandra.

(2,952 posts)Even ate my rhododendrons last winter. Only thing they leave alone are the foxglove and hellebores and daffodils . I feel your pain! Good luck!

(19,290 posts)I also allow some white snakeroot to grow. That's a native and poisonous to them and they know it.
But snakeroot will take over, if you let it. Unless ....
I made the mistake of allowing giant goldenrod - native but insanely aggressive - to grow in an area. Oops.
How I wish the deer liked goldenrod.

(3,755 posts)1. Shave small pieces of Irish Spring soap bar around the perimeter.
2. Little gross but works. Collect your pee and sprinkle around the perimeter.

(20 posts)Yeah, we have given up on tulips but they don't seem to eat the daffodils, iris, orange lillies, allium, and chives.

(197,657 posts)I was going about 75 on 64 West near Afton Mountain. It came bolting out of the forestry median script. I swerved a bit right it tried to turn to its left. It busted the glass out of my drivers side mirror. It also left a long streak of deer snot on my door and window. No blood. I couldnt see in my rear view mirror so it mustve gotten up.
I called the Stare Police immediately and filed a claim with Geico shortly after.
I got a replacement mirror yesterday. I had no idea how much I used that mirror.
