Judge rules Trump can stage UFC fight at White House this weekend. Here's a breakdown of the $60 million event on the
South Lawn.
The White House's Ultimate Fighting Championship event is proceeding as planned this weekend after a federal judge on Friday declined to block President Trump from hosting the mixed martial arts fights on the South Lawn.
The UFC Freedom 250 fight card takes place on June 14, which marks Flag Day and Trump's 80th birthday. On the South Lawn of the White House, a roughly 90-foot-tall arched lighting grid, which the UFC calls "The Claw," towers over a temporary 5,000-seat arena, complete with an octagonal fight cage.
A lawsuit filed Saturday by the Public Integrity Project on behalf of two Virginia residents, a Vietnam War veteran and a civic activist, sought a judicial order to halt the UFC event. They argued that officials failed to follow federal rules and regulations to allow a privately run event to take place on government property. They also alleged that the event is "corrupt" because it will benefit Trump, who owns stock in UFC's parent company, TKO.
The Justice Department argued that the administration doesn't need a traditional permit because the event is part of America's 250th anniversary celebrations. The Trump administration had asked the judge to reject the lawsuit, arguing the date is too close to make any changes to the event and would upend months of planning, while also burdening thousands of spectators and the athletes.
