Hello everyone,
Valentine's Day is next Saturday, so we thought we'd get a head start on the fund drive -- especially since it feels like everyone could use a little love right now. This year's Valentine Hearts Fund Drive will run until the night of Sunday, February 15.
It's remarkable to think that DU has been around for 25 years as of this year, but ultimately its longevity comes down to one factor: the strength of the DU community. The truth is that this really is a people-powered website. Running DU is my job, because someone has to make sure the lights stay on and servers keep running. But I've never wanted to be the face of this community, because really DU is all of you -- the people creating the discussions, recommending them, participating in them, and policing them. And I'm proud to run a community that still believes in the concept of civil discussions, and still strives to achieve that goal, even if we fall short from time to time -- you know who you are
So this is the part where I ask you to please kick in and help keep the lights on for a little longer. The Valentine Hearts Fund Drive is the most popular fund drive of the year for good reason -- because it's the one where you get to spread the love and show your appreciation for your fellow DU members. If you can contribute, now is a great time.
- Purchase a DU Star Membership or renew your existing membership, and we'll give you Valentine hearts to share with your DU friends. For every dollar you spend, you'll get one Valentine heart to give away.
- After you complete your purchase, you will immediately receive a DU Mail message containing simple instructions on how to give away Valentine hearts to your friends.
- Monthly subscribers will also get some hearts to share -- if you are monthly subscriber, we'll send you a DU Mail message shortly with instructions on how to claim your hearts.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A ONE-TIME PURCHASE WITH A CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD WITHOUT CREATING A PAYPAL ACCOUNT...
It is possible -- please see this thread for simple instructions:

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A MONTHLY OR YEARLY STAR MEMBERSHIP AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO BUY HEARTS...
If you already have a recurring Star Membership and you want to buy hearts this week, my advice would be to use the One-Time Payment option in order to avoid setting up a second recurring payment.
If you already have a recurring payment, and you set up another one, your first one will NOT stop automatically. If you would like to stop a previous recurring payment yourself, please contact me via email at earlg@democraticunderground.com, or send me a DU Mail message.
And with that said...
Ready to get started?

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you do not receive a DU Mail message immediately after making your purchase, please be patient. In some instances there may be a short delay in processing your hearts, but you should receive them within 15-20 minutes at most. If you have to wait longer than that, please send me a DU Mail message).
Thank you for supporting Democratic Underground!

(21,323 posts)You can no longer use their payment service without creating an account, which gives Peter Theil access to your data.
Used to be you could use a one-time payment without creating an account and I am sorry to lose that.
You'll have to wait for the check in the mail, so sorry.

(23,485 posts)PayPal has not changed their procedure -- you can still check out as a guest. They ask for an email address to send a receipt to, but if you don't want a receipt you can enter any old address. Doing this does not create a PayPal account.
In addition, Peter Thiel left Paypal 24 years ago, in 2002, when PayPal was sold to eBay. PayPal separated from eBay in 2015 and is now a publicly owned company.
Making a payment to DU absolutely does not give Peter Thiel access to your data. That is simply not true.
For anyone who would like to know how to make a contribution to DU by credit or debit card without creating a PayPal account, please see this post:

(21,323 posts)... when I tried to check out as a guest it told me that as the last step I needed to enter a password, and MUST create an account to complete the transaction.
Maybe I was doing something wrong, but as far as I could tell, I followed the instructions, and that's where it got me.
Just mailed the form & check, though, so hopefully I won't be seeing the ads for very long!
philosophically,

(23,485 posts)but you don't have to. The trick at the end is to uncheck the slider at the bottom of the payment page which says "Create my PayPal account for Purchase Protection on eligible purchases."
As soon as you decline that, the "Pay now as guest" button appears.
It is garbage "dark pattern" web design IMO, but that's how you get around it.
One day I am going to come up with an alternative to PayPal. It's just that integrating a new payment system into our software will be a huge undertaking, so I just keep putting it off, because what we have now is annoying, but it does work.

(23,485 posts)Thank you for the mailed-in contribution -- I re-upped your star already so you won't have a break while the check is in the mail.

(21,323 posts)...and that they don't require too much coding to get into the site!
I think it'll be worth it, though. Having a "donate" button that is quick and secure and direct might expand your fundraising productivity as well as making it easier for supporters.
appreciatively,
