TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) Israel approved plans Monday to capture the entire Gaza Strip and remain in the Palestinian territory for an unspecified amount of time, two Israeli officials said, a move that, if implemented, would vastly expand Israels operations in Gaza and likely bring fierce international opposition. Israeli Cabinet ministers approved the plan in an early morning vote, hours after the Israeli military chief said the army was calling up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers.
The new plan, which the officials said was meant to help Israel achieve its war aims of defeating Hamas and freeing hostages held in Gaza, also calls for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to move to Gazas south which would likely lead to their forcible displacement and exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis.
One of the officials said the plan would be implemented gradually in an attempt to give efforts for a ceasefire and hostage release deal a chance to move ahead. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing military plans.
Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 after a decades-long occupation and then imposed a blockade on the territory along with Egypt. Capturing and potentially occupying the territory again for an indefinite period would not only further dash hopes for Palestinian statehood, it would embed Israel inside a population that is deeply hostile to it and raise questions about how Israel plans to govern the territory, especially at a time when it is considering how to implement U.S. President Donald Trumps vision to take over Gaza.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) Israel approved plans on Monday to capture the entire Gaza Strip and remain in the territory for an unspecified amount of time, two Israeli officials said, in a move that if implemented would vastly expand Israels operations in the Palestinian territory and likely bring fierce international opposition.
Israeli Cabinet ministers approved the plan in an early morning vote, hours after the Israeli military chief said the army was calling up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers.
The new plan, which the officials said was meant to help Israel achieve its war aims of defeating Hamas and freeing hostages held in Gaza, also would push hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to southern Gaza, what would likely exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis.
Since a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapsed in mid-March, Israel has unleashed fierce strikes on the territory that have killed hundreds. It has captured swathes of territory and now controls roughly 50% of Gaza. Before the truce ended, Israel halted all humanitarian aid into Gaza, including food, fuel and water, setting off what is believed to the be the worst humanitarian crisis in nearly 19 months of war. The ban on aid has prompted widespread hunger and shortages have set off looting.

(51,856 posts)on Hamas as they see no other alternative to keep their land?
And wouldn't that "tactic" discourage the release of the remaining hostages as Hamas would see the situation as "nothing to lose"?

(2,992 posts)The real plan all along - since decades before Oct 7th - was to drive Palestinians out and annex Gaza to Israel. It will happen to the West Bank too. It won't stop there.
Who will stop Israel?

(12,665 posts)And that includes Arab nations. Netanyahu seems to believe that if he kills as many Palestinians as possible and takes control of all their land, any remaining Palestinians will simply give up and either accept Israel by giving up all their rights or be forced to beg other countries to allow them to live there with no rights and probably in utter poverty with only menial work allowed because countries like Egypt are not rich and have their own citizens to protect.
With Trump supporting essentially anything Netanyahu chooses to do, the fate of the Palestinians is looking pretty dire.

(36,656 posts)It was "destroy Hamas and their infrastructure, retrieve the Hostages".
Occupation doesn't appear to be a viable approach. It will need too many Israeli troops, and Hamas will have plenty of targets as a guerilla army fighting on its home turf.
I wonder if it's essentially a bluff.

Just to be clear, I do not want Israel or Gaza squashed. Israel is losing world wide support though.

Israel makes a good case that religious nationalists shouldn't control a democratic government.

(915 posts)I say that as someone who's been strongly pro-Gazan since I developed some awareness on the issue. What Israel has and is doing is horrific. My heart breaks for Gazans and I'm nauseated by how my country and party support Israel.
No, I don't want Israel to be "rewarded". I don't want Gazans to lose their homeland. But the reality is this has been a nightmare existence for decades. Most Gazans have spent their entire lives under the boot.
And there doesn't seem to be change anywhere on the horizon. The US support is stubborn and the most powerful of countries that support Gazans aren't willing to do much of anything but vote on resolutions. The American and Israeli left wings can't flip their country's direction.
Enough. I want better for them. A historical injustice, but the injustice may be more survivable elsewhere. There are future generations to consider. Who am I to insist they live like this and "not give up the fight".
All that said, I also understand those who won't leave. I try to imagine if the US were put under that type or seige and how difficult it would be to go. But if it might be a better path for me and future generations it certainly would seem something to heavily consider.

(49,163 posts)For them to leave, they need a place to go. I wouldn't be surprised if Israel and US use military force on Egypt to take them at gunpoint.

(49,163 posts)Trump will withdraw all US aid to Egypt until they give in. Israel's plan all along was to make Gaza unlivable so there are no other options but to purge everyone.

(9,374 posts)which is very different than Anti-Semitism. The new plan is pretty clear of it's intent.
Anti-Semitism is "hostility and prejudice directed against Jewish people"
Anti-Zionism refers the opposition of the movement to create a Jewish state in the Middle East, roughly corresponding to the historical land of Israel, and thus support for the modern state of Israel.
Some like to conflate the two which I think is ridiculous.
