US immigration authorities appear to have begun deporting migrants to South Sudan, attorneys say

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration appears to have begun deporting people from Myanmar and Vietnam to South Sudan despite a court order restricting removals to other countries, attorneys for the migrants said in court documents. Immigration authorities may have sent up to a dozen people from several countries to Africa, they told a judge.

Those removals would violate a court order saying people must get a “meaningful opportunity” to argue that sending them to a country outside their homeland would threaten their safety, attorneys said. The apparent removal of one man from Myanmar was confirmed in an email from an immigration official in Texas, according to court documents.

He was informed only in English, a language he does not speak well, and his attorneys learned of the plan hours before his deportation flight, they said. A woman also reported that her husband from Vietnam and up to 10 other people were flown to Africa Tuesday morning, attorneys from the National Immigration Litigation Alliance wrote.

They asked Judge Brian E. Murphy for an emergency court order to prevent the deportations. Murphy, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, previously found that any plans to deport people to Libya without notice would “clearly” violate his ruling, which also applies to people who have otherwise exhausted their legal appeals. A hearing in the case is set for Wednesday.

2. South Sudan, yet another barely functional state. That country's government may lack the territorial control to refuse

to take deportees.

War-torn Sudan refused. All three rival governments in Libya also refused.

What hell-on-earth place with they try next, Yemen?

I don't understand the urgency and stupidity of getting them out of the country, which costs far more than just keeping them here. Oh, I know! Deport them before they have their day in court or talk to attorneys. Got it.

...because I would deport Stephen Miller, his wife, his kids, Tom Homan, and anyone else involved in this to South Sudan. Let them figure it out when they get there. See how they cope.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/05/20/migrants-may-have-been-deported-south-sudan-despite-court-orders-lawyers-say/

"A federal judge on Tuesday evening ordered the Trump administration not to let a group of migrants being transported to South Sudan leave the custody of U.S. immigration authorities.

U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy in Boston wrote that the Trump administration must not let the migrants being transported to South Sudan out of their custody to ensure that the migrants will be able to be returned to the United States if the court finds that their attempted deportations are unlawful. The order also applies to other migrants being deported “to any third country” — meaning nations where deported migrants are not citizens.

..The order came in response to an emergency request from the lawyers for a group of migrants who asked Murphy to intervene after indications that federal immigration authorities may have deported up to a dozen immigrants from Myanmar, Vietnam and other countries to South Sudan..."
