Bishop Budde hopes Pride Month can be 'antidote' to 'unnecessarily hurtful' rhetoric

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, who asked that President Trump have mercy on LGBTQ children and immigrants during a prayer service he attended in January, says she hopes Pride Month celebrations this year help LGBTQ people heal from months of amped-up speech and policies targeting their identities.
I pray that it is a really joyful, inspiring gathering where people feel safe, where they feel seen, where they feel supported, where they can laugh and learn, Budde said about Pride in an interview with USA Today published Monday. Maybe it is a good antidote to some of the meaner rhetoric that has been unnecessarily hurtful. And just be a balm for people. We all need that.
Budde, the Episcopal leader for the Washington area, made national headlines when she used a prayer service following Trumps inauguration to make a direct plea to the president who sat in the first pew of the National Cathedral with first lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance on behalf of people in our country who are scared now.
There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives, Budde said during the service. She said most immigrants, even those without proper documentation, were good neighbors, and the vast majority are not criminals. She told ABCs The View in the days following her sermon that she would welcome a one-on-one conversation with Trump but would not apologize, as he demanded in a lengthy post on Truth Social. I am not going to apologize for asking for mercy for others, Budde said.

(154,148 posts)I had the honor to be confirmed by the first Episcopal Bishop - the Rt. Rev. Barbara Harris (who was also a BFF of my mom when they were in high school...lol). I think it was not long after she was elevated in '89.

(154,148 posts)but when she was active, she was out in the public quite a bit. I know before becoming a priest, she counseled prisoners in prisons and later ministered them there when she became a priest. She was a Suffragan Bishop assigned up in MA but her home was always Philly!

(21,694 posts)My sister spent a year at Drexel for Grad school.
So I used to visit her. Now, she lived in a corner apt where the trolley made a turn.
Got used to sleeping there despite that! We even visited post her return to NYC to finish grad school.
We saw the Liberty Bell, natch. The Art Museum. The Italian Market. An area that had cool clothing stores, and an incredible Crafts shop "The Works". Such beautiful items. Yes, I had a Philly cheese steak. One of few times I liked any beer; Sam Adam's Summer Pale Ale. Some more places, too. Like the old houses from waaaay back.
So many good times! 👍🩷

(154,148 posts)so it's nothing but a humongous blended "college campus" in that area! I knew a couple of folks from school who went there for engineering (they had a 5-year engineering major - at least back in the day... not sure what they do now).
Mother Katherine Drexel (now a Saint when she was canonized back in the early 2000s by Pope John Paul II) was the niece of the founder of Drexel University.
