Democrats reclaim the American flag

Source: Politico

06/13/2025 05:55 AM EDT

Democrats’ newest approach to win back voters is a fresh embrace of the nation’s oldest symbol. Two days ahead of Flag Day, when President Donald Trump’s military parade will run through the streets of Washington, Democratic Reps. Pat Ryan (D-N.Y.) and Chris Deluzio (D-Pa.) fanned out Thursday afternoon to give a gift to their colleagues to unite them.

It was a 4-inch-by-6-inch American flag, which they passed out at almost the exact moment, unbeknownst to them, that Sen. Alex Padilla was getting forcibly removed and handcuffed at a Homeland Security press conference in Los Angeles — an act House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries would later call “unpatriotic.”

The flags, made in Deluzio’s Pennsylvania, came with a message in an accompanying dear colleague letter written by Ryan, a West Point grad who served two tours in Iraq, and Deluzio, a U.S. Navy officer who did three deployments there. They have joined forces to become co-chairs of the first-ever, 18-member Democratic Veterans Caucus, formed just three days ago.

“Patriotism does not belong to one party,” the letter read. “The flag, and the values it stands for, belong to every single American.”

I can have my arms free to hold my very large and heavy sign. I've see tons of protesters doing that at the numerous protests I've attended. June 14 will be my 30th protest against tRump! Woohoo!

Flag Day is tomorrow, of course. I may have to fly it this year. I think I just need a few screws to get the mount wobble-free again. Would be cool if the streels ran red, white and blue so far as the eye can see, as to be worthy of media coverage asking "Why now?" Cool!

enough for our group and extras to give away tomorrow at our NoKings Day protest.
We also ordered an American flag and a Pride flag to hang outside our house to be delivered today.

9. What do you mean "re-claim?"

We have our flag. The flag of the United States.
Trump Republicans have their flag:

Their flag, as they have proudly and clearly demonstrated on numerous occasions, is the Russian flag. Not just one of them. All of them. If they don't try to hide it, why should anyone pretend that they feel otherwise?

Where is the conflict? We have our flag. They have theirs.

the Gadsden Flag as well. I am so used to curling my lip at that flag it's almost hard to bear!! lol! I actually went to Walmart, a place I thought I would never buy an American Flag at, first of all, but they had them. Made in the USA, too! thought perhaps it would be ok as that heiress lady took out that full page ad for the no kings march.

This is a really redneck area and only have few places to buy poster supplies to make a 'fun' poster, there was barely anything left! All the markers, the colored pencils, glitter even!! Wow!!! There are 3 in this cluster of rural towns on the Idaho/Oregon border! This is exciting!

ps, I can't believe it! I have 1,500+ posts! it only took me 17+ years to achieve that goal!! Yay!

From USA Today the other day -

'No Kings Day' protests planned for June 14 with aim to reclaim the American flag

(snip)

"We don't want to cede the narrative ground to Trump and MAGA that they they own the flag, they own patriotism," said Indivisible cofounder Ezra Levin, one of the organizers. "In fact, the most patriotic thing you can do (in) America is to show up peacefully and petition your government for something better."

Today's OP mentions that a couple members of Congress have also been handing out little flags for their (D) colleagues to underscore this theme.

Sometimes an article is an article.

(trust me, I avoid Politico's and The Hill's most RW-leaning nonsense stuff and look for those with actual info)

15. But then you should blame USA Today for saying the same thing

I put the USA Today headline and link to the article in my reply to you above.

USA TODAY

'No Kings Day' protests planned for June 14 with aim to reclaim the American flag

And in the USA Today article is THIS -

(snip)

American flag imagery is 'very intentional'

The American flag should be prominently displayed at these protests, said Common Defense spokesman Jacob Thomas, an Air Force veteran. The veteran-led organization is one of about a dozen veteran groups who partnered with Indivisible to create the protests.

“For some people they feel like its been co-opted by Republicans or extremists. It can feel uncomfortable to use,” he said. “We have to reclaim them for their higher purpose.

(snip)

I.e., it was a DIRECT QUOTE from the group "Common Defense"'s spokesman Jacob Thomas.

I get what you are saying about much of the media but in this case, the critique is not valid.

that Dems do this.. Pass out American Flags!

I remember reading a long time ago that Our Flag should never have been Relinquished to gops... I think this was over the Protests for the Viet Nam War.
