Republicans brace for redistricting 'catastrophe' in California

Source: Politico

GARDEN GROVE, California — Republicans wield almost no power in California. But as a moribund state party gathered here over the weekend, it confronted an even grimmer reality now suddenly settling in: If the state gerrymanders its congressional map, they’ll practically be an endangered species. “It’s a guillotine,” said Dale Quasny, a party delegate and real-estate broker from suburban Los Angeles County. “We won’t be able to pick up the pieces and move forward. I mean, we were making a little headway, but this would be a catastrophe.”

Long locked out of power in Sacramento, one thing that Republicans here and nationally have counted on for years from California was influence in U.S. House races — and the ability to help deliver Republican majorities by winning battleground races in the state’s Central Valley and Orange County.

Now they’re on the brink of losing even that — a consequence of the redistricting wars that could cost the GOP as many as five House seats in California.

It is in part the Republican president, Donald Trump, who got them here. The GOP base in the state is as ardently MAGA as anywhere. But it was Trump’s push for a Republican gerrymandering in deep-red Texas that sparked a national battle over redistricting, provoking Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic leaders to respond with a Nov. 4 ballot measure to gerrymander California’s lines.

He's a carpetbagger who moved into the district when it became apparent he would lose the election in his home district.

Before him it was Duncan Hunter, Junior -- convicted criminal.

And before him it was Duncan Hunter, Senior -- he was MAGA before MAGA was around.

Still remember that when Duncan Hunter fils ran for the first time, to fill the seat formerly held by his retired father, the ads continued to state simply "Duncan Hunter." I'm sure they effectively fooled a lot of the rubes living back in the hollers of East SanDiegotucky county, who didn't realize that they were now voting for the son.

My already low opinion of a lot of the voters there was confirmed when they elected Issa, to fill the seat that became available after D. Hunter fils got sent to the hoosegow for stealing campaign funds. Here's a recap of some of the gamier allegations against him plus bonus support for Trump idiocy, from Hunter's Wikipedia page:

On June 24, 2019, federal prosecutors submitted a court filing alleging that Hunter used his campaign funds for extramarital affairs with five women, including three lobbyists, a congressional aide, and one of his staffers [166] between 2009 and 2016.[5][167] Ahead of a court hearing in November 2019, Hunter expressed support for President Donald Trump's downward sentence modification for convicted war criminal Eddie Gallagher, but refused to answer reporters' questions about his case.

My neighbor, who moved to Arizona, said he would kill himself if Newsom were elected. I was hoping, but he moved instead.
