Donald Trump says he is bringing $15bn lawsuit against New York Times

Source: The Guardian

Donald Trump says he has brought a $15bn lawsuit against the New York Times, alleging defamation and libel.

In a social media post late on Monday, the US president accused the newspaper of a “decades long method of lying about your Favorite President (ME!), my family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole”.

The president singled out the New York Times endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election and said the paper had become a “virtual ‘mouthpiece’ for the Radical Left Democrat Party.”

The lawsuit was being brought in Florida, he said, without providing further details. Reuters reported a court filing showed Trump suing the newspaper.

He cited previous examples of lawsuits brought against ABC News and anchor George Stephanopoulos, as well as Paramount over its 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris. Both cases were settled for $15m and $16m respectively.

trump is represented by a four attorney firm, an 8 attorney firm in Houston that I have never heard of and a solo firm.

Part of the claims were brought in another lawsuit that trump lost and had to pay attorney fees

19. MaddowBlog-Why Trump's new civil suit against The New York Times is so bizarre
Tue Sep 16, 2025, 02:11 PM

Americans have never had a president who, while in office, sued independent news organizations for publishing reports the White House disapproved of.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trump-new-york-times-lawsuit-rcna231651

About a week ago, for reasons that were not altogether clear, Donald Trump threatened to sue The New York Times. Evidently, the president wasn’t kidding. NBC News reported:

President Donald Trump on Monday filed a federal defamation lawsuit against the New York Times, four of its reporters and Penguin Random House over coverage of his 2024 campaign. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, which covers the area where Trump resides outside the White House, accused the newspaper of attempting to ruin his reputation as a businessman, sink his campaign and prejudice judges and juries against him in coverage of his campaign.

......Right off the bat, it’s important to note that describing the court filing as a “lawsuit” is itself generous. As writer Jesse Berney summarized, the lawsuit is “like an 85-page Trump Truth Social post. It’s hilarious.”

That characterization is more than fair. Reading it, I felt a little embarrassed for the lawyers who were responsible for producing it, especially after seeing random Trump-related images that seemed to have been included in this dreadfully silly document for no apparent reason.

There’s no reason to think the case will succeed. For that matter, Trump’s attorneys should hope they avoid sanctions for having filed such an absurdity in the first place......

The volume of cases might make it seem as if this has become routine, but the broader circumstances remain bizarre: Americans have never had a president who, while in office, sued independent news organizations for publishing reports the White House disapproved of.

And yet, Trump can’t seem to stop suing independent news organizations for publishing reports the White House disapproves of.

This lawsuit is truly bizarre and the lawyers involved should be sanctioned or disbarred. Again, one of the firms is based in Houston and no one at my firm has heard of them.

Serves you right, for your non-stop minimizing of what a mortal threat trump is to our democracy and to our way of life.

I'm sure Ross Douthat and David Brooks would disagree with the foregoing. Ask me if I give a fuck, NYT.

...as President. Here's a recap from an earlier posting about the lawsuit (which was locked).

Trump has now undeniably reached his "Fat Elvis" phase. Bizarre late-night tirades on "'Truth' Soclal", calling for the arrests of everyone from Soros to Obama, sundowning in the middle of the day (he couldn't remember who Melissa Hortman was--you know, the other most recent political assassination)...the only things missing are the tacky white jumpsuits and trashed hotel rooms!

29. Does it have to be public who is paying the fees for Trump's lawyers?
Thu Sep 18, 2025, 02:27 PM
Sep 18

I know that if he is nominally paying them himself, he could just say he will and then never pay (and he's in a really neat position for that now - after representing him in a ridiculous suit like this, no one part from true believer MAGAs will hire these lawyers again, so it's not like they risk their standing with MAGA by demanding payment from Trump). But it's possible they knew they'd never get out of that, so said someone else must pay them regularly.

Do the public get to know who?
