Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a flight risk

Source: BBC

Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after being determined a "concrete flight risk" while under house arrest.

The former Brazilian president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced to more than 27 years in prison, but he remains under house arrest pending appeals.
...
In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son".

Good - don't trust this family an inch.

Amid growing speculation that Bolsonaro would be imprisoned in the coming days, supporters had been planning to hold a “vigil” on Saturday night outside the luxury condominium where their leader has been living under house arrest.

The protest had been called by Bolsonaro’s senator son, Flávio Bolsonaro, in a social media video: “Are you going to fight for your country or are you going to watch everything on your mobile phone while sitting at home on your sofa?” He invited Bolsonaristas to “come and fight with us”.
...
Adding to those suspicions, Moraes said Bolsonaro’s electronic ankle monitor had been tampered with at 12.08am on Saturday. That suggested “the convict had planned to break the ankle monitor in order to ensure the success of his escape, aided by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son”.

Moraes noted how Bolsonaro, who counts US president Donald Trump among his key international allies, lived about 15 minutes from the US embassy. In August, Bolsonaro was accused of seeking asylum in Argentina, where another right-wing ally, Javier Milei, holds power. In 2024, Bolsonaro mysteriously spent two nights inside the embassy of Hungary.

Arrested and tried him and then imprisoned him or at least kept a damn close eye on him. Instead, he was allowed to run for president with 34 felonies on his record. When he's gone (and I hope how soon!), a law needs to be passed forbidding anyone to run for president with even ONE felony conviction on their record, at least within the prior 25 years. (This allows for any youthful mistakes, such as a drug conviction or drunk driving, assuming they have a clean record thereafter.)

I would not put it past Trump to help him in any way he can.

...........Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km (8 miles) from Bolsonaro's home.

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Bolsonaro has blown his opportunity to prove he’s not a flight risk.
Lock his sorry ass up. Immediately.

Did the president talk to Bolsonaro as the Brazilian plotted to escape? Trump said yes, but the White House isn’t so sure.

An amazing new Trump controversy, Part I of II:

- Friday night: Jair Bolsonaro’s son summons a crowd to their family home

- Later Friday night: Bolsonaro takes a soldering iron to his ankle bracelet days before starting a lengthy prison

- Saturday morning: Bolsonaro is re-arrested

An amazing new Trump controversy, Part II of II:

- Saturday afternoon: Trump says he spoke to Bolsonaro the night before and planned to see him “in the very near future”

- Monday afternoon: The Trump White House isn’t sure whether Trump actually had the conversation he referenced two days earlier

On Friday night, Bolsonaro’s son publicly encouraged the former president’s supporters to come to his home for some kind of previously unannounced protest. Hours later, early Saturday morning, law enforcement officials were notified that Bolsonaro’s ankle monitor had been tampered with. Though it was still on, Brazil’s former president had taken a soldering iron to his tracking device after his son had summoned a crowd to the family’s home.

Bolsonaro’s lawyers said he wasn’t trying to flee (notwithstanding earlier efforts to find a country to escape to) but rather, the former Brazilian president felt unwell because of the medications he was on.

So according to his own defenders, this guy took a soldering iron to his ankle monitor because some drugs left him confused.

And it was around this time that the story got even weirder.

Trump says he spoke to Bolsonaro last night and plans to meet with him soon

......Of course, given the Brazilian was on house arrest and poised to begin a lengthy prison sentence, it was far from clear how, exactly, Trump intended to hang out with him. For all intents and purposes, it would suggest that Trump either was going to make a previously unannounced trip to Brazil, or the American president expected Bolsonaro to make his way to the U.S.

But wait, there’s more.

So let’s recap:

Friday night: Bolsonaro’s son summons a crowd to their family home.

Later Friday night: Bolsonaro takes a soldering iron to his ankle monitor.

Saturday mornin[g/b]: Bolsonaro is re-arrested.

Saturday afternoon: Trump says he spoke to Bolsonaro the night before and planned to see the Brazilian leader “in the very near future.”

Monday afternoon: The White House isn’t sure whether Trump actually had the conversation he publicly referenced two days earlier.

I can appreciate on a personal level how easy it is to grow inured to the madness surrounding our incumbent American president. But even by Trump standards, this one’s a doozy.
