Two West Virginia national guard members shot on Wednesday near the White House in Washington are in critical condition. The incident happened near the Farragut West metro station and comes amid a controversial deployment of troops to the US capital city ordered by the Trump administration.
FBI director Kash Patel, Washington mayor Muriel Bowser, and other officials confirmed in a press conference that both the guardsmen are in hospital in critical condition. What we know is that this is a targeted shooting, Bowser said. One individual appeared to have targeted these guardsmen, she said.
Washingtons Metropolitan police department (MPD) wrote on social media shortly before 3pm local time that one suspect was in custody. Jeffery Carroll, an executive assistant chief at the MPD, told the press conference the suspect came around the corner and immediately started firing a firearm at the troops. The suspect was also shot during the interaction and was transferred to a hospital. It was unclear who shot the suspect.
Patel said the incident would be treated as an assault on a [federal] officer and that the FBI would work with the Department of Homeland Security, the Secret Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the mayor and local police because this is a matter of national security. The press conference came after Patrick Morrisey, West Virginias governor, had said both soldiers were killed in the shooting, but later posted an update clarifying that more information was needed.

The condition of two West Virginia national guard members shot on Wednesday near the White House in Washington is unclear after the state governor received "conflicting reports" and Donald Trump said they were critically wounded. The incident happened near the Farragut West metro station and comes amid a controversial deployment of troops to the US capital city ordered by the Trump administration.
While Patrick Morrisey, West Virginia's governor, had said both soldiers were killed in the shooting, he later posted an update clarifying that more information was needed. "We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information," wrote Morrisey on X, minutes after first posting that they were killed.
Washington's Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) wrote on X shortly before 3pm local time that the scene is secured and one suspect is in custody. A task force of an estimated 2,375 national guard troops are currently activated in Washington, with West Virginia making up the second largest contingent at 416 troops, only behind DC's national guard at 949 troops.
Pete Hegseth, the US defense secretary, said Wednesday that Trump has asked for 500 additional troops to be deployed to Washington. "This happened just steps from the White House and it will not stand and that's why President Trump has asked me - and I will ask the secretary of the army to the national guard - to add 500 additional troops, national guardsmen, to Washington DC," Hegseth said.

You make it sound like the NG members weren't targeted when it certainly seems that they were.

(477 posts)Why? Because this is exactly why the orange shitstain is sending troops into cities. It is a provocation and this is the desired result. He wants citizens to become so enraged that they attack the gestapo so he can declare martial law and end elections until he says otherwise. I don't know about you but I feel sick when I see them kidnapping innocent people or throwing women to the ground. I wish, in those moments, I had a gun and could shoot the thugs. I don't have a gun and wouldn't do it but someone with a gun and less self control will. It is inevitable that more violence will be directed at these disgusting pigs. This is the plan. The idea that they are there to fight crime is ludicrous.

(3,683 posts)of tolerance. Someone who has been hurt by this badly enough. Someone at the end of their rope. Someone more inclined to violence or unproductive solutions to the problem Trump has created. It only takes one. Statistically the probability of this happening is almost 100%. It's amazing it has taken this long.
And yet one can't rule out the possibility that no one acted out for so long that Trump has taken action to make this happen. I'm not saying there is evidence, just that if this is what he wants he'll make it happen one way or the other.
I'm not excusing this guy for taking the bait and putting himself, these NGmen, and us all at risk.
But there will be more deaths. Individual people will pull the triggers, but the person setting things in motion is Trump.

"I didn't sign up for this shit." And you know, actually they didn't.
How many professional police officers get shot and killed every year, without nearly this amount of freakout. If Nat Guard want's to play cop, they got to accept the downsides to the job.

(131,479 posts)WASHINGTON (AP) Two West Virginia National Guard members who deployed to the nations capital were shot Wednesday just blocks from the White House in a brazen act of violence.
FBI Director Kash Patel and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said the Guard members were hospitalized in critical condition. Bowser said they were victims of a targeted shooting.
West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey initially said the troops had died, but later walked back the statement to say his office was receiving conflicting reports" about their condition. The governors office did not immediately respond to questions about the attack and the condition of the troops.
A suspect who was in custody also was shot and had wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

It is unlikely, but not impossible. And easily disproven if the guardsmen had never been to Afghanistan.
I have no idea why it happened and dread the Old Man turning this against all Afghans, refugees, or foreigners in general. He is already calling it an "act of terror" though I have not seen any evidence of that.

The suspect was caught and busted by the Washington D.C. Police.
The Guardsmen, of course, were there supposedly because D.C. couldn't handle its crimes. No West Virginia National Guardsman was around to catch the suspect.
To repeat: the D.C. police, not the West Virginia Nat'l Guard, caught the suspect -- virtually immediately.
