Lindsey Vonn crash: American skiing icon airlifted away after terrifying fall in Olympics women's downhill

The worst-case scenario for Olympian Lindsey Vonn came just seconds into the women's downhill final in Cortina, Italy, on Sunday afternoon.
Vonn's body struck a gate as she made her first big jump less than 13 seconds into her run, altering her momentum and direction, prompting a scary crash as she flung sideways and bombed out.
The race was on hold for more than 20 minutes as Vonn was tended to on the course. The scene at Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre was eerily quiet, as thousands at the bottom of the mountain, including Vonn's family, were left stunned and largely speechless. The worldwide feed initially caught audio of Vonn's brutal cries from pain after her horrifying spill. Downhill skiing is the fastest and most dangerous alpine event; the Olympia delle Tofane course routinely saw Sunday's racers eclipse 75 miles per hour as they hurled themselves down one the world-renowned venue.
Vonn was put on a stretcher and had to be airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

I suspect there's a tacit rule in effect at DU that Olympic results not be posted before NBC has had a chance to package them for consumption in the US, but I believe this transcends any such rule.

(7,524 posts)But having worked with stunt actors and seen torn ACLs, I cant believe she was even trying. Brave of course, but predictable?
Im not an orthopod or kinesiologist, but the ACL bears much of the stress from bent knees like in downhill skiing. Unless there was a foolproof brace, a knee like that can rupture on the very first extreme load. I hope she was generously compensated for this exhibition, the pain and risk are great.
Again, good vibes and prayers for recovery. But someone needs to say this about fame and reality-TV risks.

(23,831 posts)She was skiing well enough and the training runs they are going very close to all out. She doesnt fall and I bet she medals.
She said it was rotting or twisting the knee that was hardest, especially when she landed after getting air. But she was skiing at a high level with the knee that bad, she just got off line and wasnt able to recover.
Stinks, greatest woman skier ever and just snake bit at the Olympics.

(11,998 posts)She knew her body and the risks better than anyone. Apparently, she had raced with a torn ACL before and had a brace.
I do know that first day back on skis after an ACL injury is nerve-wracking. I suspect she was plenty nervous.
Looks like the crash was caused by her arm clipping the gate. Maybe her knee didn't support her, maybe it was just nerves. Regardless, I hope she recovers quickly and has a great life after professional skiing.

(4,137 posts)make the podium. I'm amazed she was allowed to race with a week-old ruptured ACL. If this required medical clearance, I question the doctor who granted it. I hope she will be able to walk and ski recreationally after surgery and rehab.

(14,092 posts)Why didn't you realize this before?
I know this is going to be an unpopular view, but I think her return had a lot to do with ego. Too much of it, in her case. She just couldn't accept that she was done. Fini. Finito. Skiing a course like that on a 100% gone ACL is just asking for trouble, and that's exactly what she got. Do I feel sorry for her? Of course I do. But do I think she should have seen it coming when she signed on for this? Yup. for sure.
FakeNoose
(40,756 posts)... but she couldn't accept it until today. Lindsey has had an illustrious career ... but it's time to hang up her spurs.
She'll do well as a TV commentator, and maybe a celebrity coach/instructor. There are other careers out there. Poor Lindsey.

(7,788 posts)And that's what makes this tragedy even sadder. Yes, she knew. Yes, she realized the danger. Call it ego, call it sheer stubbornness to give it one more try. She knew, and although she may now regret her choice, I'm guessing she doesn't regret following through on her drive to give it one last go.

(7,557 posts)Thinking you are going to compete at the highest level of the most dangerous sport on Earth with a torn ACL really tests that line.
Wiser heads should have prevailed on this weeks ago, but at least we have (yet another) perfect metaphor of the American character.

(76,721 posts)It was a real crash and burn. I remember some place out west I think it was Purgatory Ski area
and they had a practice course for the U.S. Ski team for downhill skiing and the first 1/4 mile or so
had no turns and at the first turn there was a bunch of bales of straw between the ski slope and some
trees. I skied the course but at a much slower pace and not doing the straight down the mountain thing.
The best part of the Winter Olympics is the downhill events. Just to get into the starting gate takes
guts and you can see the skiers skate skiing the first couple of hundred feet to build up speed and then
they are on ice and snow spending a lot of time in the air as they are going 644 mph.

I screwed up my knees a few times, but I was always proud that I never had to go down in a toboggan. I quit before that became more likely. I miss it, and live vicariously through those who still ski.

AverageOldGuy
(3,573 posts)Her pole grabbed one of the flags along the course and threw her off in the middle of a turn.
More than likely the crash tore up her ACL even worse, but, sad to say, there's a chance that she suffered other injuries in this crash, in addition to or instead of re-injuring the ACL.
Hope she didn't suffer other/more injuries.

Lindsey Vonn has spent two decades proving the fastest line in downhill skiing is usually the one that looks least survivable on replay. Now, at 41, she is trying to do one of the most audacious things an athlete can do: win with a torn left ACL that has become its own storyline.
How to watch Lindsey Vonn at the Winter Olympics
Venue: Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre Cortina dAmpezzo, Italy
Date: Feb. 8-12
TV: NBC, USA Network
Streaming: Peacock, NBCOlympics.com
Be sure to check out The Athletics Olympic schedule interactive page and Games Briefing, a daily Olympics newsletter.
The timeline is critical. Downhill is Vonns signature, the purest expression of her speed game, and its a single-run medal race on Cortinas Olympia delle Tofane track. No series. No margin. You get one shot, and the mountain does not care how famous you are or how many times you have rebuilt the rest of the machine to keep doing this.
Vonn doesnt need validation. The Minnesota native already owns the 2010 Olympic downhill gold, three Olympic medals overall and 84 World Cup wins. This is about whether experience, pain tolerance and a practiced willingness to absorb risk can still get her down a course that behaves like an icy vertical hockey rink at 70 to 80 mph.
