UK to chair UN Security Council amid reports Iran's leader has been killed

Source: The Independent

Britain is chairing an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Saturday following missile strikes across the Middle East. The meeting has been called at the request of France, Colombia, Russia and Bahrain after the US and Israel struck Iran on Saturday morning.

The attacks, which hit targets in Tehran and across the country, prompted retaliation from Iran with strikes reported in several Gulf countries including the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Saturday is the last day that the UK holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council before handing over to the United States.

The meeting began around 9pm UK time, with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres telling the council: “We are witnessing a grave threat to international peace and security. “Military action carries the risk of igniting a chain of events that no-one can control in the most volatile region of the world. “Let me be clear, there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes. Lasting peace can only be achieved through peaceful means, including genuine dialog and negotiations.”

Israel and the US to have all possible actions taken against them by the General Assembly. Sanctions, expulsion from the GA etc. Although it is not, perhaps, in the rules I suggest their microphones be cut and they be physically and forcefully escorted out of the building. As far as action by the Security Council we will always veto anything. That is the great weakness of the UN and always has been. There should be no "permanent members" with veto power.

80 years later the world is being held hostage by the victors of WW2 who each have permanent veto power. Russia for example should not even have a seat since that seat was the "Soviet Union" not Russia. Yes I know it was debated and the UN gave in but it wasn't right. It's like if the US drifted and broke apart and then somehow California was given the permanent US seat. Why? Since the US would no longer exist then why or on what rational justification?

But yes we largely are in the mess we are in the Middle East because of the US and Israel obstructing the UN since WW2. All while knowingly and purposely making phony promises to all of the countries in the ME with the exception of Israel who the West helped behind the scenes to gain nuclear weapons. The West allows Israel to thumb their nose at nuclear disclosure while demanding it of every other country in the world.

The rest of the world should look very seriously at the example and justification the US leadership has used for attacking other countries and kidnapping and killing their leaders because we feel they "won't do what we want" and that they are a "threat". Those exact justifications would be applicable to countries in the West including the US.

We created NATO. Hungarys still in. They’ll give us room to be democratic and sort out our nastiness. Pretty much the same as Vorban. That’s how far we’ve fallen. Without us under a more liberal regime they face doom. The Bush’s were cool with NATO As was Reagan They have their own pasts to get over, too. That’s democracy

If Iran had the fire power I'm quite sure they would have hit the U.S. I'm sorry other countries had to pay for trump's ego and greed.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States and Israel clashed with Iran at an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Saturday where the U.N. chief and many countries urged a halt to their attacks and a return to negotiations to prevent the conflict from spreading further into the region and beyond.

Secretary-General António Guterres told the council that everything must be done to prevent an escalation. “The alternative,” he warned, “is a potential wider conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability.”

Guterres said the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes violated international law, including the U.N. Charter. He also condemned Iran’s retaliatory attacks for violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, insisted the U.S. military action was lawful.
