Trump says he 'might' move US troops to Poland from Germany

Source: Politico (EU)

May 9, 2026 12:57 pm CET

U.S. President Donald Trump said he “might” move U.S. troops from Germany to Poland, as the Pentagon prepares to pull around 5,000 American soldiers out of Germany over the next year.

“Poland would like that," Trump told journalists on Friday when asked about the prospect. "We have a great relationship with Poland. I have a great relationship with the president. ... I like him a lot, so that's possible.”

The Pentagon earlier this month confirmed the U.S. will withdraw 5,000 troops from military bases in Germany, following through on a threat Trump made after sparring with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran war. Trump has since gone on to warn that the Pentagon would be "cutting a lot further than 5,000."

Polish President Karol Nawrocki said Wednesday that Poland is ready to host American troops withdrawn from Germany and that he would personally lobby Trump to send the soldiers east. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had warned on Monday that Warsaw should not "poach" troops from allies.

How much flattery and cash he gets.

No concern about doing the right thing for the American people.
It is always about him.

In Poland, the office of the Prime Minister has more power than the office of the President.

Being of Polish descent, I can appreciate the nuanced power balance which is structured in that country.

They hate the orange f-wad.

Or as you point out the leaders are split.

Is the office of President in Poland more head of state kind of thing?

Unfortunately, there is a significant conservative element among the populace, and the current president hails from that.

It is the same as in this country. Putin unleases his web bots and propaganda machines to fire up the conservative base in Poland so that it will rail against the sensible majority, which is tenuously clinging to power. By sowing the seeds of divisiveness, Putin is undermining the stability of the country.

Their plans to destroying western democracies has been successful.
Brilliant but diabolical.

So the Poland president is like the Royal Family.
Figure head and ceremonial.

Fortunately, the Polish Prime Minister has more power than the Polish president, and he dislikes Trump.

Also, and the spokesperson of the Polish parliament has stated that Trump is a promoter of chaos.

BTW the President or P.M. of Poland called Trump a Russian asset about 2 months ago
and Trump is going to abandon this idea after he gets a phone call from Putin.

Hey, here is a good idea and that is post U.S. troops where they can be in contact with Russian
forces. I know it is a stretch but Trump is provided with really good intelligence from the military,
our intelligence operations, and the State Department maybe he can read those documents?

The man’s lack of knowledge about everything, intellectual disabilities, and his declining mental
and physical health is crazy.

Our Republican owned media has done a job of covering up his faults and failures. What
% of Americans know that he went to Military School to avoid going into a juvenile detention
program as teenager because he put a smaller student into the hospital and tried to throw a teacher
out of a window.?

From the article:

"Donald Trump is 'a leader of chaos' whose administration is also meddling in European elections, according to the speaker of Poland’s parliament — a rare critic of the US president in an otherwise strongly pro-American country."

The Parliament speaker, Włodzimierz Czarzasty stated, "Trump is becoming a leader of chaos and I think that in many cases Trump’s behavior is absolutely irrational."

He’s never heard of that.

This is government by whimsy.
You see,, he “likes” Poland, at least for the moment.

The ignorance is staggering. Imagine thinking you can just send in 5,000 of your military to a country because you “like” them.
