Violent crime rates plunge in America's big cities

Source: msn/Axios

1h

Violent crime fell sharply across the largest U.S. cities in early 2026, extending a nationwide decline that began after the pandemic-era crime spike.

Why it matters:
Data from 67 major U.S. law enforcement agencies show violent crime fell across major categories during the first quarter compared with the same period in 2025.

  • The declines show up across every major region, suggesting a systemic, nationwide trend.
  • The quarterly reports collected by the Major Cities Chiefs Association have been a good measure of trends that are reflected in the annual FBI crime data released in the fall.

  • By the numbers: Homicides dropped 17.7%.

  • Robberies fell 20.4%.
  • Rapes declined 7.2%.
  • Aggravated assaults decreased 4.8%.

  • Zoom in: Some of the nation's biggest cities posted especially dramatic homicide declines in the first three months of 2026.

  • Among those that saw sizable percentage drops in homicide were Washington, D.C. (64.7%), Philadelphia (54%), San Diego (50%) and Memphis (34.4%).
  • New York City experienced a 31.7% drop in homicides during Mayor Zohran Mamdani's first months in office.
  • Los Angeles (23%) and Houston (36.4%) also posted homicide declines during the same period.

Between the lines: The new numbers complicate the political narrative around crime heading into the 2026 midterms. President Trump has repeatedly described major Democratic-led cities as gripped by violent crime.

The GOP goons gave already started investigating the cities claiming they are reporting "fake data" while handily ignoring the time and money spent on addressing the causes and re-implementing "community policing" that worked during the '90s under Clinton).

"only AFTER" he called in the National Guard last August, yet this data in the OP is covering a period after the last Commissioner left (in December 2025).

Team tr-HUMP does it all the time to made the Orange Fuhrer look good and very very competent.

You can not believe anything these Fascists say or do. It is all contrived theatrics and masquerading to twist and bend public perceptions to better align with their various Fascist narratives, policy plans and social engineering agendas.

Project 2025,... We are sorry,... but we have no clue whatever you are talking about.

But here is a crisp Achtung and Sieg Heil from the Heritage Foundation - as they gloriously wave their Swastika flags in your face.

When the grants run out and people kicked off of programs and can't afford food or shelter, the robberies are going to increase.

Am already hearing the reports of gasoline thefts from cars. I remember the days when cars were being sold with gas tank lid locks due to a rash in siphoning. But the story I heard on the radio this morning was about how some woman's car had the gas tank actually drilled to empty the gasoline (a couple thousand dollar bill for tank replacement).

However, as it has been previously stated, once the public starts to realize that they are being given nothing while their overlords are hiding in bunkers...

Talk to me about 'crime rates plunging'.

Damming up a river stops flooding... until the dam breaks. Then, the flood destroys everything.

It's not smart planning, to say the least.

That helps with grudge killing, domestic violence, and road rage incidents.
Just kidding, but it's tough when people have to stay home because they can't afford to go out and commit crimes. That happened during the Covid lockdown too..

Part of the COVID-19 relief was to hold off on evictions. That is no longer the case.

We just had a case in Houston where a young man broke into a home during the early morning hours. "Professional" burglers break in during the day when people are away at work. The homeowner jumped up, grabbed his firearm, chased the intruder and shot him dead OUTSIDE his home.

Of course the gun nuts are saying the intruder "got what he deserved", but we'll see. The "castle doctrine" allows you to protect yourself, other people IN your home and your property. It doesn't allow you to shoot a FLEEING SUSPECT in the back! At the very least, badass homeowner will have to lawyer up and deal with the investigation. Consequences!
