US envoy: Greenland 'was not on a map' until Trump 'put it on a map'

Source: The Hill

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) claimed that Greenland “was not on a map” until President Trump “put it on a map,” comments that follow rhetoric for months from the president to acquire the island.

“What I’ve found, that Greenland was not on a map, until Donald Trump put it on a map,” Landry, who is also Trump’s special envoy to Greenland, said in a clip posted to the social platform X on Tuesday.

“In other words, the United States, before Donald Trump, had basically ignored this place,” he added. “And I think it’s really to the detriment of both the relationship between the United States and Greenland, and opportunities that we could bring Greenlanders, I think that that’s important as well. And so, I would tell you, that the credit to bringing opportunity to Greenland is squarely on Donald Trump.”

Landry visited Greenland this week and told a Danish media outlet that he spoke on Saturday night to Trump, who told him to “go there and make a bunch of friends,” according to the Times-Picayune/NOLA.com. The New York Times reported that when he was touring the Greenlandic capital of Nuuk, a local flipped off Landry and a group he was with.

I would also add to the imbecility known as Jeff Landry that we have had a base there for many years long before the Apricot Appeaser even knew about Greenland.

My cats run back and forth between windows to follow a squirrel. Trump doesn't think something exists unless he owns it. If he doesn't own Greenland it doesn't exist. He probably couldn't follow an outside squirrel from window to window, either.

as did the government of NATO member Denmark, of which Greenland is a self-governing territory. But the map that interests Piggy is the Mercator map, a flat projection of the spherical Earth, that shows Greenland as much larger than it really is. Piggy is interested only in "owning" a lot of property, and Greenland looks very large on that flat map. Piggy would love to have that apparently enormous hunk of real estate indicated as US territory, and therefore "his," on that inaccurate map that he'd proudly display everywhere.

Greenland has always been on all maps, and the US has never ignored Greenland. We have had a military base there, Pituffik, formerly called Thule, since 1951, under an agreement that allows the US to operate it as long as both Denmark and the US are members of NATO. But of course Piggy wants out of NATO, which might mean that Denmark could take over and close Pituffik and kick out US personnel. The only reason Greenland is now "on the map" that it was never not on, is that Trump is trying to take it away from Denmark. Landry is not helping the situation a bit, either.

I call F’n Bullshit. When my father was in the army in the early 60s his division was tasked with building the f’n airport on top of a mountain for both Nato and commercial because Thule, at sea level, fogged in day in and day out.

This f’n administration needs to go back to remedial world history and learn a lot of shit@

So he named it “Iceland.”

He wanted to send competitors to a much colder island, so he named it “Greenland.”

Dimdonniechucklenuts never bothered to learn or remember, otherwise he’d go after Sakhalin Island.

As I’m old, I today thank my elementary school teacher for an unforgettable lesson and a lifelong interest in geography.

This prompted the US to build a number of military bases during the Second World War, including Thule Air Base, airfields, and a military hospital. The agreement was finally ratified by the Folketing after the end of the war on 16 May 1945.[6] By the end of World War II, the U.S. had built or expanded 17 facilities, including air bases including Narsarsuaq and Kangerlussuaq.

Following the Second World War, the sovereignty and defence of Greenland returned to Denmark. The United States continued to be interested in a permanent military presence due to the increasing tensions of the Cold War; however, Greenland was expected to remain under sole Danish control by the public. A US proposal to buy Greenland was rejected by the Danish government, as the Danes felt a paternalistic, "White Man's Burden"-like responsibility for its people.

On 27 April 1951, Denmark and the United States signed the Greenland Defense Agreement. The US accepted the legal obligation to help defend Greenland if necessary, within the framework of NATO. The agreement allowed the US to keep its three main military bases in Greenland—Thule, Narsarsuaq and Sondestrom—and to establish new bases or "defense areas" if deemed necessary by NATO.[9] The agreement allows US troops to freely use and move between these bases. The US military was given jurisdiction over the defense areas,[10] but agreed not to infringe upon Danish sovereignty in Greenland.[9] The military airbase in Narsarsuaq was developed into a joint base of Danish and American troops.[11][12] The 2004 Igaliku Agreement stated that the US must inform Denmark and Greenland of any proposed changes.[13]

The United States built a secret nuclear-powered base, called Camp Century, in the Greenland ice sheet in 1959.[18] This was part of Project Iceworm, a top secret United States Army program which aimed to build a network of mobile nuclear missile launch sites under the Greenland ice sheet. The goal was to install a vast network of nuclear missile launch sites that could survive a first strike. The base and the project were abandoned in the late 1960s.

But no, according to moron Landry, the US has completely ignored Greenland before Trump
