Trump says he, not Congress, is in charge of Kennedy Center in reversal

(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump floated that he’d remain in charge of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts just days after he said Congress would retain control over the institution.

“I’m the chairman, so we’ll just keep it going. Somebody has to do it,” Trump told reporters Friday aboard Air Force One. “It’s lost hundreds of millions of dollars for years, and yet it’s something you have to keep going, you know. It’s the arts.”

Trump, in a social media post last week, said he would be “working with Congress to transfer this failing Institution back to them so they can make a determination as to what to do with it.”



Trump’s comments show that the governance of the Kennedy Center remains in limbo just days after a court ruling ordered the removal of the president’s name from the building.

The center was previously governed by a bipartisan board of trustees, which Trump last year purged and filled with allies who installed him as the chair. Trump on Friday repeated criticisms of the judge in last week’s court ruling, calling him “totally conflicted.”

“We’re going to spend a lot of money on fixing it and making it, bringing it back to health, and the judge really made it very hard to do that,” Trump added.
