Trump denies that he campaigned on ending wars: 'I didn't promise anything'

President Donald Trump denied that he has broken his campaign promises by entering a war with Iran and vowed that the conflict would not be endless during a contentious interview this weekend.
Trump told NBCs Kristen Welker in a pre-taped interview on Meet the Press that the war with Iran would soon come to an end, repeating an assertion that he and members of his Cabinet have made for months as the war has stubbornly dragged on without an end in sight. In his latest remarks, the president characterized the holdup as a dispute over language surrounding Irans future ability to acquire or purchase nuclear materials.
The president claimed that he made a distinction during his campaign for president in 2024 between wars and endless conflicts, adding that it wasnt worth building up Americas military to never use it.
First of all, I didn't guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest military in the world? he asked. When you say I promised, I didnt promise anything. I don't like these endless wars. [But] this is not an endless war, Trump told Welker.

I have never heard him promise to not start any wars. But to proclaim you can start a war because you never promised to NOT start a war is disingenuous in the extreme. All that NO NEW WARS crap was simply that: crap. Lies.
Perhaps Welker should not have said, you promised but instead insisted you LIED about not starting a war would have been more factual and accurate. No one seems to want to call him a liar to his face, so she gave him an out.

(11,319 posts)Just show the video clip of him, ask him "Explain yourself." and hold the microphone while he attacks them.
Then repeat, "Explain yourself here." (with a second example of the shit-taco saying the exact same thing somewhere else.
Never ask him another question without first putting him on the back foot and second staying on it until he either huffs and puffs and blows his term down or (hopefully) dies of a massive stroke on camera.
Either one is acceptable, but I have a STRONG preference for the latter and not the former.

(2 posts)In the lead up to the 2024 elections, I was told by trump that if I didnt vote for him, that gas would hit $4.00 a gallon, that we would be in a war with Iran, and the economy would tank. And guess what? I didnt vote for trump and gas hit $4.00 a gallon, we are in a war with Iran, and the economy is not doing too well. Shout out to trump, he was right again!

Welker pressed forward, adding, So youre saying you didnt break your promise. And yet, Mr. President, in your first term, you held to that promise, and it was so fundamental to who you were as a candidate, to a first-term president. What changed, because you insisted no new wars?
Trump replied, First of all, I didnt guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest military in the world? (As the exchange continued, the president tried to defend his position by referring to the stock market and then pivoted to attacking Welkers professional integrity.),,,
But the underlying point is just as important, if not more so, since Trumps record is unambiguous.
Trump: "I didn't guarantee no war."

Trump guaranteeing no more wars:
Throughout the 2024 election cycle, Trump and his team went to bizarre lengths to present the Republican as the peace candidate who would expel the warmongers from the federal government and lead as a peacemaker, while rascally Democrats prepared to lead us into war. Common sense might have suggested any thinking adult would know better than to believe such obvious nonsense, but some voters accepted these absurdities at face value and cast their ballots accordingly, optimistic that the GOP nominee would pursue a foreign policy rooted in restraint.
In other words, many Americans believed Trump when he told voters, among other things, Im going to be the one that keeps you out of war; were not going to have war in the Middle East; and they said, You will start a war. Im not going to start a war. Im going to stop wars....
Im reminded of a George Orwell quote from 1984 that I emphasized in my book about GOP efforts to rewrite recent history: The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.
