Two federal judges are set to hold separate hearings this week on the Trump administration's scuttled $1.8 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund," despite vows from the Department of Justice that the controversial plan is "not going forward."
With President Donald Trump continuing to defend the fund and calling for those charged in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol attack to be compensated, attorneys for a watchdog organization as well as a coalition of plaintiffs have asked federal judges to issue orders formally blocking the creation of the compensation fund.
"If it was up to me, I'd pay them the kind of money that they deserve. People have been destroyed. Lives have been destroyed," Trump said during an interview with NBC's Meet the Press that aired over the weekend.
The legal challenges to the fund are set to ramp up on Wednesday when a federal judge considers a request from the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington to issue an injunction blocking the fund. The nonpartisan organization has argued that despite the Trump administration's assurances, the charter documents creating the fund remain "in full force and effect."

(58,399 posts)AND, even dropping the entire bullshit settlement does not erase the fact that they perpetrated a fraud upon the court. DOJ falsely claimed to the court that there was a controversy to be adjudicated, but Trump was on both sides of this controversy. It was total and utter self dealing, trying to give it legitimacy by dressing it up as a lawsuit.

(138,225 posts)WASHINGTON (AP) A federal judge on Wednesday rejected a government watchdog's request for a court order temporarily blocking the Trump administration from forging ahead with a new $1.776 billion settlement fund for compensating people who claim to be victims of a weaponized government.
But the judge ended a hearing by issuing a "fair warning" to President Donald Trump's administration: "Don't play possum with this court," U.S. District Judge Richard Leon told a government attorney.
Leon ruled from the bench in favor of the administration, which argued that the watchdog's lawsuit is moot because acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told Congress earlier this month that the government is scrapping its plans for the fund. Leon, who was nominated to the bench by Republican President George W. Bush, said he accepts Blanche's representation for now.
The judge's refusal to issue a temporary restraining order isn't the final word on the fate of the government's "Anti-Weaponization Fund." Leon said he will consider a separate request by the plaintiffs Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington for a preliminary injunction that would block payouts from the fund on a more permanent basis.
