The Five-Alarm Fire No One Is Talking About
Trump has just done something breathtakingly reckless: he plunged the United States into direct conflict with Iran a country the State Department designates as a state sponsor of terrorism without doing the basic, unglamorous, absolutely essential homework of protecting Americans at home from retaliation.
Irans regime may be weakened and its leadership decapitated but it has long embedded terrorist assets and proxy networks across the Middle East and the wider world. Counterterrorism analysts have warned that Iranian operatives, criminal surrogates, or terrorist proxies could attempt attacks inside the United States and the West, even at this calamitous time for the Islamic Republic. Irans global terrorism footprint is not limited to proxies alone. Its covert units work with other terrorist groups to facilitate operations and logistics across continents. Its networks are involved in smuggling components, financing, and operational support in Europe and beyond. This extensive proxy and clandestine infrastructure means that, even if Irans conventional forces are degraded, its ability to threaten Western targets via embedded terrorist assets remains real.
Iran is not a minor regional irritant. It has spent decades building asymmetric capabilities through proxy militias, covert networks, and intelligence operations. It is unclear how much those networks have degraded over the past several days but since this strike did not come as a surprise to the Iranian regime, it stands to reason that its leaders had put contingencies for vengeance in place even in the event of their deaths. That is why Iran continues to bombard American allies with missiles across the Middle East now and why it is not unreasonable to believe that it may launch terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.
That is precisely why any president who chooses to escalate militarily against Tehran has an absolute obligation to ensure that counterterrorism and counterintelligence defenses at home are fully staffed, politically insulated, and operating at maximum capacity.

(8,643 posts)Then Trump orders military strikes on Iran, a nation with millions of people in armed forces and/or willing to die for their nation, AKA potential terrorist attacks. And our DHS is full of untrained, undisciplined, unsupervised hot heads running feral in our nation. No intelligent leadership, no INTEL, just quotas to fill or they don't get their blood money.
What could POSSIBLY go wrong. How much time do you have for THAT question?
Has Johnson called the House back into session? Or does he RIGHTLY fear some members will call for impeachment on the floor? Can we hold Johnson to account when bombs start going off within our borders, because that is probably a very real possibility. Just what does Trump have on Grinder Mike?
And has anyone thought to install breathalyzers in the DOD?

(3,163 posts)We are all at risk from a terrorist attack in retaliation. Incompetence at the top of our leadership trickles down. Its just a matter of time, IMHO.

Also back in 2018, Epstein said in a text that "a certain psychotic leader whose name we all know might 'bomb Iran' if he ever felt cornered like a rat.

(746 posts)Something bad is bound to happen i.e., terrorist attack. This makes it all the more inevitable. It will be all his fault.

(7,698 posts)and you can bet he'll blame it on everyone EXCEPT his own lack of understanding and preparation. Especially, somehow, he'll make it all about the Democrats, although there are a zillion shares out there of him complaining Biden, Obama, Clinton were going to bomb Iran and were all bad negotiators.
Someone check trump's negotiation skills -- they'll be horrible over rated!

(7,698 posts)we're going to have to change up education when we get the world back again. One of the classes I think we need is a class on gaslighting and propaganda. That would be a great class in which to teach critical thinking, too...
