1. Oh, I don't know. My hummingbirds have been coming to the windowsill feeder which are in the shade.

I have full sun on the deck most afternoons. Good luck I hope they come back for you. I Certainly don’t have as many as I had.

but we have had several different feeders over the years, my favorite being the one outside my kitchen window. Every once in awhile, they just wouldn't hit on a new feeder. I guess they have some tastes and dislikes. Same food mixture. Changed feeders again and the party returned.

I made homemade syrup. They didn't like the store brand sugar and wouldn't come to the feeders with the syrup I made with cheaper sugar. I had to get them Dominos. Ha.

Glad they are making an appearance for you.

8. Oh ya, always make my own syrup.....and a friend doesn't cook hers, just uses hot water, and I tried to tell her

ya gotta boil the syrup!!!!! But she “knows” everything, so I only mentioned it once or twice about boiling it. But I always boil mine, like every authority says to.

11. there actually isn't much point to boiling

because the first one to feed is going to contaminate the feeder. I mean it doesn't hurt anything to do it but it really is just a waste of energy. more important to change old feed out and disinfect the container occasionally with bleach. mold is bad, bacteria and yeasts ferment the sugars - not especially harmful but probably tastes bad.

12. I'd never use bleach

I cleaned the feeders each time I changed the food, but I think it was rec. not to use bleach (?)

I thought boiling helped melt the sugar into the water, make it a simple sugar syrup (?) Over the years, I've made brown sugar syrup for pancakes, and always cooked it.

best, cheapest sanitizer there is. (plain old bleach, not detergent or scented versions) yes boiling is good to melt if your water isn't that hot and it will sterilize the solution (I think if you boil 5 entire minutes) but since it is so quickly contaminated it doesn't really help anything.
