Rush Doshi
Assistant Professor, Georgetown University / Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations
On his first trip to China in nearly a decade, President Trump was greeted by cheering crowds, a red carpet and some warm words in translation from Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Trump sounded positive and confirmed he'll host Xi in Washington in September. Accompanying the U.S. delegation is a Who's Who of Big Tech. For them and the world there's a lot at stake. Tariff tensions, the AI race and the war with Iran are all on the table, along with a stark warning from Xi on Taiwan. Xi reportedly warned that if the issue is "mishandled" it could lead to "a highly dangerous situation." Rush Doshi served on President Biden's National Security Council as a top official on China and Taiwan. Now a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, Doshi joins the program from Washington.
Lewis Goodall
Co-host, "The News Agents" Podcast
The United Kingdom is once again engulfed in political drama. After the chaos of the post-Brexit years, when the Conservative Party churned through four Prime Ministers, it is now the turn of the ruling Labour Party to experience turmoil. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's party performed terribly in last week's local elections, prompting a growing chorus within Labour to call for him to step down. Today the drama was kicked up a notch when Sir Keir's Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, resigned in an attempt to trigger a leadership election. A second Labour MP also stepped down in hopes of giving another leadership contender, Andy Burnham, the chance to re-enter Parliament. It's already a tough time for the country. The post-Brexit years have been turbulent in the U.K., with the high cost of living in particular leading to widespread dissatisfaction. Lewis Goodall, formerly a journalist at Sky News and the BBC, is now the co-host of the popular podcast "The News Agents." Goodall joins the show.
Jeremy Diamond
Jerusalem Correspondent
Despite an apparent ceasefire, the people of Lebanon are still living under Israeli airstrikes. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported 22 people dead in military strikes on Wednesday alone. The IDF says it continues to intercept attacks from Hezbollah. Meanwhile peace talks are continuing, with Israeli and Lebanese officials meeting for a third round in Washington today. Jeremy Diamond joins the show from Jerusalem, where celebrations of Jerusalem Day saw many Israeli nationalists march through Palestinian parts of the Old City.
Brendan Ballou
Former Special Counsel, U.S. Justice Department / Author, "When the Companies Run the Courts"
Brendan Ballou is a former federal prosecutor and founder of the Public Integrity Project, an organization challenging corruption and abuse of power. He joins the show to discuss how companies are evading accountability by quietly limiting Americans' access to the courts.
