Oren Liebermann
Jerusalem Bureau Chief
Diplomacy between Tehran and Washington is breaking down as a fragile ceasefire hangs on by a thread. Iranian state media reports Tehran has suspended talks with the U.S. over Israel's intensifying military activity in Lebanon. Residents of southern Beirut have been ordered to evacuate the Dahieh area as Israel prepares to launch military strikes against Hezbollah. Oren Liebermann joined from Jerusalem to break down what all this might mean for the ceasefire and the prospect of lasting peace in the Middle East.
Jan Egeland
Secretary General, Norwegian Refugee Council
Civilians are bearing the brunt of escalating tensions in the Middle East. Iran's economy and infrastructure are crippled by months of bombardment that have dealt severe damage to some 150,000 homes, shops and schools. The Norwegian Refugee Council, working on the ground in Iran, warns that millions have already been displaced due to the conflict. The Council's Secretary General, Jan Egeland, joined from Tehran.
Ivy Meeropol
Director, "Ask E. Jean"
Magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll stunned the world in 2019 when she revealed in her memoir that Donald Trump had raped her in the 1990s. Despite President Trump's denials, Carroll has gone on to sue him successfully twice for defamation and sexual assault. Carroll's story is now back in the spotlight as Trump's DOJ investigates the columnist for possible perjury during her testimony. The saga is documented in a new film "Ask E. Jean." Its director, Ivy Meeropol, joined from Los Angeles to discuss the extraordinary case.
Jesmyn Ward
Author, "On Witness and Respair"
In her latest collection of essays, two-time National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward reflects on the healing power of storytelling. Speaking to Walter Isaacson, Ward looks back on the fundamental role of her maternal grandmother in the forging of Ward's writing philosophy of "telling it straight, telling it all." The author also discusses her upbringing in the poor Mississippi town of De Lisle, and her own place in the lineage of Mississippi's literary figures. Ward joined the show from Pass Christian, Mississippi.
