Capitol Christmas tree travels down Mt. Rose Highway

The holiday season is officially on its way—courtesy of a 53-foot red fir named Silver Belle, which began its journey to the U.S. Capitol Building Sunday morning.

Harvested from the Carson Ranger District in Nevada, Silver Belle made a grand exit from Reno, winding its way down the scenic Mt. Rose Highway early Sunday morning. But this isn’t just any tree—it’s the Capitol Christmas tree, destined to stand proudly on the West Lawn in Washington, D.C., bringing a slice of the Silver State to the nation’s capital.

cut down for show. (Yes, I am a little grumpy on this subject. Not that fond of tree farms, either. A colossal environmental waste. And I speak as someone who loves the smell of evergreens. Living trees are another matter entirely. )

ESPECIALLY does it make me ill that such a beautiful tree should be cut down for the horror show currently terrorizing us.

They get a new one every year. The tree on Constitution Avenue near the White House, the national Christmas tree, is a permanent fixture.
