Washington County voters to choose new commission chairman in Tuesday's Special Election

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. — Early voting concluded Friday for next week's special elections in Washington County, where voters will choose between Mel Daniel and Doug Watkins for commission chairman.

Daniel, whose father Horace served as chairman for years before recently stepping down, has never held political office but says he feels prepared for the role. The 56-year-old Sandersville native said his lifelong connection with the community was a good qualification for leadership.

"Maybe God had a plan. I don't know. I kind of feel like I've been training for this job for 40 something years, maybe, maybe 56 years," Daniel said. "Born right here, rooted in this county. I love the county. I love the people."

Watkins brings seven years of experience as District 1 commissioner to his campaign and emphasizes his consistent attendance record at board meetings. The fellow Sandersville native and business owner said his experience positions him to lead the county forward.
