The Race for Orleans Criminal District Court Clerk: Personal Stakes and Public Records

NEW ORLEANS — With less than a month until Election Day, the race for Criminal District Court Clerk is heating up, with two challengers taking on incumbent Darren Lombard.

Both have deeply personal reasons for seeking the office, an office that manages critical court operations and parish-wide election oversight.

The Criminal Clerk of Court is tasked with overseeing a wide range of responsibilities, including daily court operations, managing calendars, jury pools, finances, and court records. It is this last duty that has recently come under intense scrutiny.

The issue came to a head when sensitive court documents were discovered in a Gentilly landfill last month.
