'Time is going to tell': Scanlan grilled on new voting law ahead of 2026 elections
A state law requiring hard proof of citizenship to register to vote for the first time could lead to more voters turned away during the upcoming September and November federal elections, New Hampshire Secretary of State Dave Scanlan testified in court Friday.
I would expect there would be an increase of voters in that situation in a state election, Scanlan said.
Speaking at the U.S. District Court of New Hampshire, Scanlan neither praised nor criticized the new law. He said its passage could assure voters concerned about fraudulent voting, something he called critical. He agreed that the amount of voter fraud measured in New Hampshire is miniscule. And he said it remains to be seen whether the strict new requirements will overly disrupt voting or strike the right balance between voting access and election security.
I think that will be determined in the next round of elections, he said.
