Mamdani's Comment on 'Intifada' Motto Fuels Tension in Mayor's Race

Simmering Democratic disagreements over the war in Gaza burst to the forefront of New York’s mayoral primary this week, rattling the final days of an already chaotic contest.

Former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, the race’s front-runner, and Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, his chief rival, have long differed over U.S. support for the war. But as voting approaches, they have traded increasingly pointed accusations that touch on antisemitism and Islamophobia.

The tension escalated on Tuesday, after Mr. Mamdani, a critic of Israel, was asked during a podcast interview if the phrase “globalize the intifada” made him uncomfortable, and he declined to condemn it. Palestinians and their supporters have called the phrase a rallying cry for liberation, but many Jews consider it a call to violence invoking resistance movements of the 1980s and 2000s.

In the interview with The Bulwark, Mr. Mamdani said he believed the phrase spoke to “a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights.” He said the U.S. Holocaust Museum used a similar Arabic term for “uprising” to describe the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising against the Nazis, and stressed his own commitment to nonviolence and fighting antisemitism.

the mayoral race for NYC suggests he has poor judgement and should not be elected. I mean come on, there are more Jews in the NYC area than in Israel and you don't know such a remark would offend them.

Not smart enough to be mayor of NYC.

Most in the West do not know the meaning beyond thinking it meant suicide bombings. This is all trival stuff used as smears by Zionists to try bringing down Mamdani campaign and propped up the sexual harasser to mayor.

with all the Jewish voters in NYC environs.
Why even go there?
Poor judgement IMO.

Oppressed people will take extreme action into their own hands.

No poor judgement there unlike the other candidates still supporting the apartheid regime.

The reality unfortunately is there are so many Jewish voters in NYC, why take a chance of offending them.

One has to balance things and make good decisions when running for office. Again, that was not one IMO.

Gotcha questions such as those asking about Mamdani support for Palestine are trying to diverge attention away from the real problems face at home. Look at how the media is not trying to press Cupmo on his far more problematic record as governor of New York. The establishment is more fearful of a democratic socialist than a sexual predator running the largest city in America.

It's about steering clear of all that. It's not easy, especially lower profile candidates with less name recognition.

NYC's multiple choice format complicates it even more.

Look in the UK what happened to Jeremy Corbyn. The same tactics were being unleashed by the media to prevent progressive change from happening.

Nothing that I said is antisemitic. Zionist does not equal Jew. Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams are Zionist. Donald Trump is a Zionist. Katie Halper and Max Blumenthal are Jews who are staunch anti-Zionist.

See The Labour Files documentary to understand there was no real antisemitism riffe in the Labour Party.

Instead, New York should be run by corrupt sexual harassers who throw the elderly off their nursing homes.

New York would be a better place with Mamdani running the show then handing the key to Adams or Cuomo.
