Special elections set to fill Mamdani and Hoylman-Sigal's seats

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that special elections will be held Feb. 3 to fill the state Assembly and Senate seats vacated by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal.

The openings in the 36th Assembly District in Queens and the 47th Senate District in Manhattan follow the departures of the two lawmakers, who assumed their new elected offices on Thursday.

“These state legislators represented their communities with distinction in Albany, and we wish them well in their next chapters,” Hochul said in a statement. “I look forward to working with their successors and working on the issues that matter to New Yorkers.”

The 47th Senate District includes neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen and the Upper West Side, along with part of Central Park. The 36th Assembly District covers much of western and central Astoria, Ditmars, Astoria Heights and northern Long Island City.
