New Hanover County school board chairman will not seek re-election

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Pete Wildeboer, current chair of the New Hanover County Board of Education, has decided not to seek reelection to another four-year term in 2026, citing family reasons.

Wildeboer was elected chair for a second time earlier this month as he enters the final year of his term. He previously served as the board’s leader after winning a seat in the 2022 general election.

The career educator served two years on the board from 2020 to 2022 after being appointed by the New Hanover County Republican Party’s executive committee to fill a board seat when Bill Rivenbark was elected county commissioner.

Wildeboer told WECT that he has not ruled out running for office in the future.
