As members of Congress debate whether to ban stock trading, Roy Cooper, the former governor of North Carolina and a Senate candidate, announced his support for a ban.
A lot of people just dont trust Washington politicians, Cooper said in a written statement to McClatchy. Thats because too many of them look after themselves, and not the people theyre supposed to serve. But leaders are elected to serve the people they represent, not to trade a companys stock on insider knowledge to get rich.

To regain trust in Washington, public servants cant just say trust me, they have to show they can be trusted, which is why I wont own or trade any individual stocks as a candidate or when I become a U.S. Senator regardless of whether a ban is passed, Cooper said.
Cooper reported never owning or trading stocks while governor, or in ethics forms he filled out for his Senate campaign.

He will be a great senator if the republicans quit messing with the elections here.

(24 posts)3. Absolutely ban them from trading stocks
I've long proposed that all elected officials and people in position to influence policy should be FORCED to place all of their assets in a blind trust except the following:
* Their primary residence in their home state
* Any residence they may purchase in the D.C. area while they are working there
* One vacation home, if they have one
All other assets to be placed in a blind trust. And something that many my not agree with, I believe that we the taxpayers should bear the cost of the administration of those trusts since that is our price to pay to be sure that administration and elected officials are being kept honest.
