N.C. Zoo's alpha female chimp Maggie dies at 46. She was the last member of original chimpanzee

N.C. Zoo's alpha female chimp Maggie dies at 46. She was the last member of original chimpanzee troop from 1980.

Maggie, the matriarch of the N.C. Zoo’s chimpanzee troop, died Friday, the zoo announced.

The chimp was euthanized after a period of declining health, according to a news release. Female chimpanzees typically live for about 40 years, it said.

Maggie’s body was presented to the chimpanzee troop so they could observe the death and mourn the loss.

“With her passing, all the members of the zoo’s original chimp troop that opened the habitat in 1980 are now gone,” the release said. She was the alpha (or dominant) female of the troop for more than 35 years.
