Lehigh County commissioners approve election board referendum

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – In an 8-1 vote, the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday approved a measure that would ask voters to approve major changes to the Election and Registration Commission, including expanding the body from three members to five and restructuring how members are appointed.

The measure would place a referendum on the November 2026 ballot to amend the county Home Rule Charter. It would require two members each from the county’s two largest political affiliations and one from the third-largest, based on voter registration.

According to Commissioner Sarah Fevig, those parties are Democrats, Republicans and independents or unaffiliated voters. She said 97% of voters are in the top three groups.

She said the makeup represents a “balanced board of five members.”
