Hockenberry: Bond election will position LISD for 'future that's already here'
Lufkin ISD voters will head to the polls May 2 to weigh the approval of two bond propositions intended to launch the district forward into a new era.
Of the $98.25 million in Proposition A, $66.44 million is intended for renovations to the Lufkin High School campus, $21.06 million for upgrades to the LHS career technical education building, $3.5 million for construction of an agricultural science barn on the LHS campus, $3 million for school buses equipped with compliant seatbelts, and $4.25 million for districtwide safety and security measures. Proposition B will see $42 million spent on a new stadium to replace the half-century-old Abe Martin Stadium on the LHS campus.
The bond election, according to district Superintendent James Hockenberry, is just one piece of the puzzle in positioning LISD for what he calls the future thats already here.
The districts participation in the Texas Education Agencys System of Great Schools is part of realizing that future. SGS gives LISD access to unique trainings and tailored grant requests, Hockenberry said.
