Three U.S. senators urged JBS USA to negotiate a new labor agreement with workers at its Greeley, Colo., beef plant, as employees prepared to return to work following a three-week strike that disrupted operations at one of the nations largest packing facilities.
Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., sent a letter to company leadership calling for a fair contract with members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7, who walked off the job March 16.
Workers were set to resume shifts at 5 a.m. Tuesday after the union and company agreed to return to in-person contract negotiations for two days beginning Thursday. The return-to-work agreement did not include any changes to JBS existing contract proposal.
JBS workers engage in incredibly difficult, dangerous jobs, but ones that are critical for feeding our country and driving your companys success, the senators wrote. Federal health and safety laws mitigate those risks, but we understand workers in Greeley are forced to work in conditions that lead to high turnover, injury, and in some cases, death.
